My folks just sent me this picture of their 1-year old German Shepherd. He's such a fun dog... REALLY smart and incredibly loyal.

My mom had foot surgery recently and was limping around with a large boot. The dog could SENSE that she was in pain and would sit right next to her with his head on her lap whimpering. He's usually rambunctious and goofy, but he was a gentle giant around her when she was recovering from her surgery.

Anyway, here's Augie enjoying the recent snowfall from the past couple days.

We had to put our 7 yr. old jungle cat down due to urinary issues. It's been a long day with the girls. It was my wife's cat & we always joke that she's an animal whisperer since the cat(s) & dog love her so much. She's having a hard time.

He was pretty cool. He'd ride around on my lap & would only get down when I stopped. The dog would shed more than he did.

RIP Hemi.

Thanks.

Currently, no. We have another cat, which is tight with my daughter & our dog, who loves us all equally.

If we do, it'll most likely come from the pound. They can show & receive love just the same as the pure breed.

We'll see...

Sorry about this. If I remember correctly from a TV program, jungle Cats are an hybrid of domestic and wild cats. The program showed their high jump ability, clearing the top of a regular door frame. That was really cool.

I was initially interested in them cause I always heard they don't shed much.

The other cat will jump to the top of the TV center. That's a little higher than the doorway except she jumps from the window ledge. Still quite a feat.

They do like to be up as high as possible.

I prefer my house not smell like stale cat piss and litter box clay all the time.

If you own a cat - you don't smell it. If you walk into someone's house that owns a cat (and you don't), you most assuredly do.

New pup!

Cedar Springs Shall Return (MacArthur)

http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/pictu...&pictureid=862

My previous labs were 10 and 13 lbs respectively at 8 weeks old. They are around 70 and 75 lbs each. The new fella is eighteen lbs.

We went the snob route with this guy and searched for several breeders until we found one with conformation lines that I liked. I wouldn't trade my two boys for anything in the world, but lemme tell ya, this is going to be a gorgeous damn dog. His facial structure, his build, all of it is just significantly different from my 2 boys (or the foster puppy we had).

He cracks me the hell up. He's still not all that coordinated and he frustrates easily, but I get the idea he's going to be awfully easy to train.

MOhillbilly 12-20-2010 11:13 AM

you gonna show him in the ring or field?

JTagg7754 12-20-2010 11:14 AM

Not gonna sift through all of this but anyone have any experience in raising a Shibu Ina?? Or even an Ainu if you're that lucky??

I want to get one for the lady for her bday in March and I'm just curious as to how they are (even though I've read all good things).

Originally Posted by MOhillbilly (Post 7276037)

He'd be a ring dog, but I'm not going to show him. He's on a limited registration from my breeder unless I can demonstrate that I'm taking the necessary steps to ensure a successful show career. Frankly, that's a lot of work and I just won't have the time for it. I may take him to some local shows just for grins, but on a limited registration, he can't go to a true 'points' show.

Like I said - I was just being a snob. My 2 boys are from field lines and I decided I wanted a big ol' blocky one as well. You just can't find a more regal looking dog than one of those big 'field and stream' looking black labs.

Both his parents have their Champion title but his dad also has a WC (working certificate). So he should have plenty of drive. And if I wanted to put him in the ring, I could. But my dogs have it pretty easy - just layin' on the couch and fetching stuff as they please.

MOhillbilly 12-20-2010 11:30 AM

Nothing wrong with bein a dog snob. Ive had many off champions.
IMO you tend to get a better dog body and mind when you spend alittle. This isnt always true and the 'good dogs are where you find them' is alot more hit and miss than goin to someone who knows there dogs front and back.
you into the whole pedigree research?

My nature is to over-research stuff before I spend signfiicant scratch on it (I wonder if that's why baseball appeals to me...).

So it's not exactly that I'm into 'pedigree research', but I spent about 4-5 months following labrador lines, etc... to find the lines and attributes that I wanted in the pup. Most of it was working with breeders and finding out what they looked for in their stock, what they got from each line, etc... and just compiling my info.

Like I said - I wouldn't trade my 2 chocolates for anything, but I flat got lucky with them. I wasn't willing to go back to the well a 3rd time. Sooner or later I was going to end up with a lemon. So I bucked up the coin to get a more sure thing.

MOhillbilly 12-20-2010 11:54 AM

i have a sickness for pedigree research. smoke me the bitch and dogs peds if you dont mind. if you do mind that doesnt hurt my feelings either.

With the dogs i like alot of guys guard what they have and how its bred and you may never be sure in the end. Hard to make shit click unless you have 100% faith in the breeder.

Yeah, he's awesome. Very friendly and affectionate, although he's bonded more with the wife since she's home more. When we got him he was 10 months old, so he's young and very playful. And he's grown a lot since that picture, too. Big cat. And he can really jump, too. He lept up about 3/4 of the height of the closet door from the floor going after a laser dot.

Yes they are. Two years ago we went to Petsmart to get some stuff for our other dog (she passed back in March 2010) and we saw poor ugly little Lulu sitting there and my wife just couldn't leave without her. She is a pretty athletic little dog and runs up to 4 miles with me sometimes. Plus she has a really cool little howl when a stranger knocks at the door. The kids get really tickled by that howl...

petsmart is the debil dallas chief. local feed outlets have better prices and the staff has more knowledge. Youd be amazed at the stuff you could do inhouse instead of paying a vet.

This reminds me of two of my friends and their families. One family has a unusually oversize Lab. The sweetest dog you'll ever see. Puts his literally cow-size head on your lap like a puppy. The other has one spoiled bitch of a small Poodle. Crazy in the head who barks at anything and everything. Bit me once already when we we were all watching a live soccer match and suddenly jumped in jubilation after a goal. Twelve guys all wearing shorts (summer) jump up and screamed and the excited bitch bites ME out of the 12 in the thigh! Par for my luck. ;)

Lab/Poodle?! I can't get the visualization of the two dogs above mating out of my head now, after MO's post. It's sick! The only redeemable value in that visual is she would get totally pancaked.

Yep. This one comes from a Blue Ribbon winner. Incidentally, he was born in KC.

Looks like we got a "catfish". Luckily we were fortunate enough to get him just a few miles away. Now if I can get the wife to quit comparing him to the one we had to put down.
