I broke three ribs and had a collapsed lung due to a surfing accident in Mexico. The lung itself healed instantaneously. The fibrous mesh of your lung, once reconnected, seals up.
What I was left with was subcutaneous emphysema, AKA the air that escaped my lung filling up my chest cavity. Again, this doesn't hurt, but it took awhile for the swelling to go away. the REAL pain was the muscles that wrapped around my torso. As your ribs reset, the excruciating abdominal pain lasts for weeks and is utterly debilitating. Getting out of bed was nearly impossible until I figured out how to slide my feet down first. Using your core muscles is virtually impossible.
