We just got Christian Braun's brother as a backup big. He's not good, but he played a ton of minutes for Santa Clara last year and he's a 5th year guy. Might be useable.

He should be fine as a 10 minute big to relieve Dickinson.

Just need another perimeter shooter and we’re good to go.

I think Braun was a pretty good get for what they needed. Sounds like the plan is to find another big wing (McCullar returning might even be a possibility) and then eat the last scholarship.

His basketball IQ is horrific and he's probably the least efficient guard I've ever seen play college basketball. Want no part of him. I'm not convinced Self could coach him up in a way that would make him at all productive at this point in his career.

I see some EJ, not a ton, but I don't see much Taylor in there. Taylor was really REALLY ****ing effective. Love is a great slasher, but can't generate the power the EJ played with (sometimes), and can't run an offense like Taylor, nevermind that Taylor was a Ferrari. Love might be a Corvair. Fun to drive, but you might spin out and everybody ****ing dies.

I’m Hearing the chances of Kevin McCullar returning to KU next season have significantly increased in recent days. So, in a major shift, I currently think it’s more likely than not he will return to college.

McCullar left Lawrence for the NBA Combine fully planning (or hoping) to stay in the pros. He understandably didn’t want to spend a sixth year in college. Yet the versatile wing struggled in Combine scrimmages and opened the door to a possible return.

This is potentially a major development for a Kansas team with exceptionally high hopes for next year. The Jayhawks have two open scholarships, plenty of star power, and a hole in its starting lineup that McCullar perfectly fills.

There’s always a caveat; mine is that this Hearing is too early to make this definitive. I'm sure McCullar is still getting NBA feedback, as the deadline to withdraw from the Draft and return to college is May 31.

Still, I decided to write this as McCullar’s return was considered unlikely when he left Lawrence for the summer. The odds have now dramatically shifted.

It’s been a quiet few days for the Jayhawks during the dead period. With two scholarships open, I’d expected more chatter around Kansas with Arthur Kaluma, Zyon Pullin, Grant Nelson or Cam Spencer. Instead, I haven’t heard much about any players and KU.

The silence makes sense if the Jayhawks are talking it out with McCullar, and that’s exactly what I believe is happening.

Imagine this roster with McCullar back.

Dickinson, Adams, and Braun can all play the 5.

McCullar and Marcus Adams can play the small ball 4.

That should be plenty.

We could even go super small and play 4 real guards (Timberlake at the 4) like we did in 2018.

A lot of dumb KU takes on Twitter today. I’m seeing several posts about KU still needing this or that.

Even the 2015 UK team only played 7-8 guys by the end of the year.

Right now, our 10 is:

PG: Harris, Morris, Elmarko
SG: Timberlake, Chris Johnson
SF: McCullar, Marcus Adams
PF: KJ Adams
C: Dickson, Braun

I’d assume, Johnson and Braun see very limited time by the end of the season. The rest is a damn loaded 8 man rotation.

“Kevin went through the pre-draft process, which is designed to do exactly what it did,” Kansas head coach Bill Self said. “Even though he has improved his status as an NBA prospect, there is still work to be done and he has informed us that he is going to return to Kansas for his last year of college.”

“This is a big day for Kansas basketball,” Self said. “We’ve had a lot of good things happen through recruiting this offseason, but nothing that has transpired this offseason was bigger for KU basketball than having a seasoned veteran like Kevin McCullar return to our program.”

“Kevin is not only a terrific player, but a terrific teammate,” Self said. “He fit in so well in year one and we’re excited about what he’ll do with our program from a leadership standpoint.”

I just don't see how Self can sell anybody else decent on playing time on a roster that stacked.

KC_Connection 05-24-2023 03:13 PM

I mean, you know Harris, McCullar, and Dickinson are playing 30+ a game every game in non-blowouts. Playing time starts running out pretty quickly from there.

BWillie 05-24-2023 03:29 PM

Again I dont want KJ starting if McCullar is the 3. I would prefer McCullar to play a small 4 and then KJ backup Dickinson. We simply do not have enough shooting if its Harris, Timberlake, McCullar, KJ, and Dickinson

It's actually the opposite, they will only add another player if it's a game-changer.

Shay is pretty connected and is conservative with these kinds of things which makes me think it's true

I'd say Nelson pushes someone else out of minutes rather that struggles to get them. He'd back up 5 or go huge and play the 4 with Dickinson

Braun would get the shit end of the stick I think

That’s where I’m at.

And like I said before, by the end of the year teams only play a max of like 8 guys anyway. There’s only so many minutes to go around.

If it happens with Nelson or Udeh, great. I’m completely satisfied with this rotation as is though.

I think the feeling was that there’s a good chance they’d pocket the last scholarship. But this stuff is really fluid. If they can land one of Nelson, Kaluma, Pullin or Udeh, I think they do it. If not, they’ll probably run with what they have.

Love this. His playing time might be the hardest hit today, but he isn’t phased.
