Incredible match. Stan deserved that moment after last year. He's always had the game to beat the elite players, now he has the belief. He's got a real chance to win it all now, although Nadal becomes the massive favorite to take this title now.

alpha_omega 01-21-2014 08:27 AM

Wow...wish i would have seen the match...hope i can find a replay somewhere.

I'll root for Stan going forward.

nice little open here. Dimitrov drives that forehand nicely. I don't recall seeing him play much. Dude is on fire.

alpha_omega 01-21-2014 10:27 PM

Very much so. Enjoyable match so far.

I say Dimitrov takes the first - but that'll be his only one, just my guess, with the little I've seen. Seems Dimitrov doesn't recover well after laying his life on the line w/ an 'all in' ground stroke.

Nadal will wear the kid out, I'd bet.

Simply Red 01-21-2014 10:33 PM

Wow. Laser.

Simply Red 01-21-2014 10:34 PM

three ace game - good Christ. This kid can hammer.

Simply Red 01-21-2014 10:58 PM

Beautiful drop volley. I have to say, if Dimitrov could take a step back and focus on returning down the line to Nadal's backhand; he'd stay in more points on RN's serve.

KC_Connection 01-21-2014 11:44 PM

Nadal wins the clutch TB. Going to try to grind him down.

kcxiv 01-22-2014 06:14 AM

Federer vs Nadal in the Semis. Gonna be fun. Rafa obviously is the favorite. Hope to see a good match.

So many top seeds male and female got taken out early this year. Crazy shit.

what was the match breakdown by set? Did Dimi get another set or only the first?

at 23 years old, the Bulgarian seems like he could be 'Andy Murray good' in a year or two. Just seems he lacks fitness and endurance to trade punches w/ these big banger's such as RN and RF.

KC_Connection 01-22-2014 06:44 AM

Federer hasn't beaten Nadal in a slam match in nearly 7 years (Wimbledon 2007). Can't imagine he'll start now, but maybe he has one last fight in him. The conditions are certainly playing quicker than at any time in recent years, which should help.

Dimitrov never won another set, but he outplayed Nadal in both sets 2 and 3 and lost TBs. Nadal was just better on the clutch points than him and wore him down mentally/physically over the match, but that's to be expected. Grigor is a great talent.

Where is Marty Fish ranked these days? So is Fish now the best American or is it Robbie Ginepri? Yuck!

Fish barely played last year due to health issues. Not sure he has much of a career left as he's 32 now. Best American players are Isner/Querrey.

kcxiv 01-26-2014 03:41 AM

Rafa is hurt, he's getting his ass handed to him. This sux. I hate see'ing guys trying to play in pain in tennis. Makes it not so great

kcxiv 01-26-2014 04:28 AM

hmmm.. i have no words for what is happening in this final wow. This is crazy.

Silock 01-26-2014 04:33 AM

Spoke too soon. Stan's making a comeback.

KC_Connection 01-26-2014 07:51 AM

Stan always had the game to accomplish this, now he has the belief in himself to do it too. That Djokovic match last year here that he lost really changed his career trajectory.

I think there will be more where this came from.

Yeah - I've definitely missed out on some tennis over the last three years or so - things change quickly.

Good run and win for Stan, but lets not kid ourself, Rafa was hurt and hurt bad. He was crying at one point because of the pain in his back. Yes, he was up a set when Rafa hurt himself, but it would have been alot closer then it was and Rafa still made a half ass match out of it.

They did say Stan will go to number 3 in the world. Good for him, hope he keeps it up. He seems like a very nice guy. Sucks he didnt enjoy his first grandslam like he wanted to because of how he won. Thats gotta suck ass.

Simply Red 01-26-2014 08:20 AM

So is this taped?

Simply Red 01-26-2014 08:26 AM

I don't know if I'm watching a taped final - however Wawrinka looks strong early. Wow!

Simply Red 01-26-2014 08:27 AM

Or maybe in this case the Dick Enberg 'Oh My' is in order.

Demonpenz 01-26-2014 09:43 AM

it was taped it was on at 3 am.

Stan absolutely crushed Nadal before the back spasms set in (or whatever happened to him). He struggled with his nerves the rest of the way while Nadal struggled with his back/the crowd, but there's no way he doesn't deserve credit for this one. He was the better player today and throughout the tournament. Endurance, after all, is a huge part of grand slam tennis.

Doubt he cares too much. He beat Djokovic last week in a 5 set marathon on the guy's favorite court and then was on the way to beating perhaps the greatest player of all time tonight before it turned weird in the middle of the 2nd set. In the past, he would have found a way to lose a match like this one, but not any longer.

Honestly, I haven't really paid attention until just now.

Not a big fan, I would love to see him go down on the first day.

alpha_omega 01-18-2015 10:07 PM

Ohhhhh shit, they just gave Mark Castle props for playing after an appendectomy. (Comparison to Nadal). Watching tennis and still can't get free of that nightmare.

Silock 01-19-2015 12:33 AM

My interest has dropped significantly because of the lack of good American players.

Chief_For_Life58 01-19-2015 12:52 AM

Americans don't have a chance in tennis with our best players going to play college when they should actually be turning pro

alpha_omega 01-19-2015 09:56 PM

I know most of you are probably watching basketball, but Djokovic is playing his first round match.

Agreed. However, there are lots of semi-hot European female players.

alpha_omega 01-19-2015 10:23 PM

Isner wins In his first match. There's an American winning (ya, I know it's only the first round).

I get the feeling. I've always been a fan, but my interest in tennis has increased significantly since Raonic's rise into the top 10 (unprecedented for a Canadian in this sport). Not to mention Bouchard.

As for future American hopes, I like Jack Sock's chances to make the top 10 in a year or two. Injured for this tournament, though.

The funniest thing about Sock is that he (unlike other phenoms) played on his normal HS tennis team all four years. His record was 80-0...

Agassi, Capriati, Seles, Sampras, Chang, and the Williams sisters were basically all on the pro tour by 16. As someone that can still rock most of the #1 male HS tennis players, I feel so bad for those kids that had to face Sock in HS. Plus what the opposing coach usually does in that match situation is send out a sacrificial lamb player to take the loss (ie promote #3-5 player to 1 to take the loss and hope for wins at the 2-5 matches).

Imagine a #5 singles player from Kansas playing Roddick and having to face down 140+mph serves. Those matches had to be brutal to watch.

Annnnnd that's why there won't be any good American players. Because they should be playing lower level pro against way better opponets, not normal country club hs tennis kids

KC_Connection 01-27-2015 12:00 AM

Federer and Nadal certainly aren't quite what they used to be. This is setting up to be slam #8 for Djokovic, but there are a lot of contenders out there still.

Based on his performance today, Berdych really should be in that final.

KC_Connection 02-01-2015 06:27 AM

5th Australian Open (most ever in open era), 8th slam for Djokovic with a grueling win over Murray. He just physically and mentally grounded him down just like 2 years ago. Now to see if he can finally get his hands on the French Open this year, the one last slam he has yet to win.

alpha_omega 02-01-2015 06:32 AM

Congrats Djokovic. Murray hung tough for a while, but he isn't the same player as Novak.

Simply Red 02-01-2015 12:11 PM

Federer playing better in this set, but it's probably too late.

KC_Connection 01-28-2016 06:08 AM

That was basically a demolition. Don't think anybody in the world could have even competed with him for the first two sets. Djokovic will be the major favorite against either Murray or Raonic (although I'd love to see it be Raonic).

alpha_omega 01-30-2016 03:18 PM

Congrats to Kerber.
