I finally saw Knives Out. It was pretty good.

sully1983 04-28-2022 05:10 PM

The Northman was utterly incredible! The cinematography showing off the vast terrain of Iceland was amazing to see.

Violent af, weird af, trippy af, epic af, intense af etc etc . The Northman was like a combination of Gladiator / Braveheart on shrooms. And I mean that in the most sincere way. It definitely won't be a lot of movie goers' cup of tea but I loved every second of it.

The director (Robert Eggers) is a flat out genius with the amount of detail he puts into his films (whether it be the art direction, costumes, authentic dialogue, long tracking shots that build tons of tension etc etc) Just an incredible young director and I can't wait to follow his career (he's not even 40 years old yet and has already directed 3 really good / weird as hell films in The VVitch, The Lighthouse and The Northman)

Nice...loved his other films. The end of Lighthouse was about the closest I've seen to Lynch...kind of Ingmar Bergman/Lynch hybrid..

Glad to hear its as good as I would expect....

Carrie Coon as zuul. Wow:drool: Just wish she was zuul for a few more scenes though.

While it looks interesting and I do want to see it, I'm not a huge Elvis fan. I don't really think it's theater worthy.

It really takes a lot to get me to pony up theater money these days. Shit's just way too expensive. There was a time when I'd go to two or three movies a month. Now it's more like two or three a year.

sully1983 06-29-2022 05:38 PM

Haven't seen the Elvis movie yet but be warned its directed by that spaz that directed Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby. All of which were so over the top annoying to the point they all gave me a huge headache. I'm most certain the Elvis movie will be more of the same.

Stryker 06-29-2022 05:46 PM

"Top Gun Maverick" - lives up to the hype 10/10

DJay23 07-06-2022 05:13 PM

Elvis is interesting. I enjoyed it. You can definitely tell it was Baz Luhrman. Its not a full retelling of the life of Elvis, more the relationship between he and Colonel Tom. But Elvis' influences are fleshed out.

As someone who grew up in an Elvis house, it put a smile on my face to hear those songs paired with a great performance from Austin Butler.

I would say if you're alright with Elvis but don't like Baz Luhrman's style, it isn't a movie that will have been better on the big screen, but if you love Elvis, I would think you will like it no matter what.

Baby Lee 07-08-2022 11:08 AM

If the trailer is an indication, this looks to be old-school high-quality popcorn cinema.

Retreading some tropes, forging some new ground, and carried by performances.

Gives the vibe of having some of the intangibles that separate things like Silence of the Lambs and True Detective from run-of-the-mill crime thriller fare.

Do you know anything about Nathan Fielder?

He's been somewhere attached to some of the best subtle, dry, cringe comedy of the past few years. Nathan for You is a great show.

One of his best bits that went unnoticed for a weirdly long time, when Instagram first came out he would post selfies, and he happened to usually be wearing sunglasses.

Yeah, I chose the Instagram thing because I wanted to pique interest if someone is unfamiliar with him without spoiling by just putting out his greatest hits.

Wading into Nathan's unitiatied work is a fun prospect. Particularly since he presents it in a way where you have to decide for yourself what actually is funny, if that makes sense.

It's not punchlines or gags, it's just matter-of-factly presented material that dips into absurdity and you get to discover for yourself where the absurdity becomes hilarious.

One compact clip that captures his style is when he did a promo for a completely unrelated work 'How to With John Wilson' with it's own eccentricities [though Nathan was an EP on the show], and took slowly, subtly it in an entirely different direction.

Spoiler!

This is a weird movie but a fun one. If you need the conventional storytelling with stakes and resolution this probably isnt for you.
Imagine if Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Big Lebowski, Mean Streets, and One Flew Over the outstanding citizenoo's Nest all had a gangbang and made a lil bastard movie. This is that bastard.

This is a rollercoaster ride of straight WTF with good music to boot.

Buehler445 07-25-2022 10:14 AM

I watched and thoroughly enjoyed the Gray Man. I wasn't expecting a ton, but the action was good (very good), production values were great (even though it was pretty ambitious), and the performances were good.

I didn't dig the CIA guy. My wife said he was in Bridgerton or some shit. IDK, but that's really the only gripe.

There was some really smart Dialogue and banter which makes some sense with the Russos. I was really impressed with Gossling. First, he looks really ****ing good for 42 (**** that dude LOL), but he was really magnetic. He was way better than Crazy Stupid Love or The Big Short as far as being charasmatic. And the action stuff, which some of it really was him and you can't fake. Much impressed.

Evans was funnier than I anticipated. Gossling too, but he can be funny pretty well.

It was pretty low stakes in terms of me watching it being invested in the outcome, but I really enjoyed it, and so did the wife, which was unexpected.

BigBeauford 07-31-2022 01:20 AM

Vengeance is perhaps the best movie I've seen this year.

I watched Mr Jones on Prime.

It's really good. Not happy, not funny, but good. Good in a Schindlers list kind of way.

I will however, say that if you haven't read up on the Holodomor, do that first. They don't beat you over the head with a lot of it, rightfully so, it would take away from the execution a good bit. Without that background knowledge though, it takes a bit away from the story.

Ok, saw this tonight with the wife. Not what I expected at all. It was basically a love story. It wasn't a bad love story... just a love story for the most part with some cool story telling mixed in. Wasn't horrible but just wasn't what I was expecting really.

I thought it was pretty decent, worth a 1-off watch if you're bored and in the mood. It's 1000x better than the first bootup that starred Stalone, and I guess much closer to the source material from the comics (?)

It was okay- the 2nd (Chronicles) I thought was really good- even though it was deadpanned by critics after the first movie got surprisingly good reviews, which wasn't expected as it was released during dead time - typically after the post holiday releases prior to award season when studios don't expect much from the film in terms of $$$ or winning any awards.

There are absolutely no newer movies out right now that I want to see :(

I was wanting to go see that “greatest beer run ever” movie but it’s already out of all the local theaters.

It's on AppleTV.

I enjoyed Vesper, probably too slow for some.

Totally derivative, but very impressively put together. Hallmarks of a new classic

That actually looks funny. I will probably check it out.

DC ****ed up another potentially cool movie? Shocking.

WhawhaWhat 10-22-2022 01:41 PM

I liked Black Adam. It's not The Batman and doesn't have a some deep story but it's a good popcorn flick. The trailer tells you everything about what you're getting into.

Great post credit scene too.

Black Adam is a jumbled mess. Worst part is the rocks acting. Almost scorpion king bad. But it was a fun movie.

Pierce rocked.
The female hero was horrible and useless.
Hawkman was a falcon clone in the movie.

I want a good detective vs bad guy drama. They do not exist anymore.

I am going to guess his powers.

The Last Duel is Ridley Scott in absolutely prime form. I initially skipped it because the marketing for it was terrible, but it's probably one of the top 5 movies I've see lm from him.

Right, so DC in spoiler. DO NOT CLICK if you can't resist.

Spoiler!

FWIW, the Stranger on Netflix isn't a bad watch. It certainly isn't Die Hard, and is pretty dark, but it isn't a bad look if you want a murder mystery.

Lou wasn’t a half bad little watch. Wasn’t perfect but I was down.

New adaptation of All Quiet on the Western front is coming in to rave reviews (95% RT). Excited to watch.

Elvis was excellent and I loved the way they did the whole movie. Hanks was incredible in his role.
