do you remember their performance from the concert for NY City by chance?.. was brief, just 2 songs, but was epic. They do a good job of keeping that concert off of youtube for the most part. I have the DVD

Billie Idle

When the original BiS split up one of the projects coming out of it was Billie Idle with First Summer Uika being the lead and getting support from Nozomi Hirano. They recruited Momo Momose and Yashui Yuuhi. After two years Yuuhi left the idol business and the group recruited Akira Momose, Momo's sister. In June this year former BiS lead Pour Lui joined as well making Billie Idle more BiS than the current BiS groups. Their style tends towards 80s retro rock.

Pikarin

Started off a your typical sugar sweet poppy idol signed to the same major label as BiS. Once Idol is Dead opened up the floodgates to different idol sounds she started going more and more towards heavier sound. Now six years later this is what her music sounds like:

Sounds like a punkier take on early thrash with growling lyrics. I usually prefer cleaner vocals.

How many people actually listen to the majority of videos posted on this thread? Just curious.

I get mostly strong elements of Japanese "Burning Spirits" punk/hardcore with some classic Grecian (they're Greek) metal guitar work, and some American grindcore. RE: growling vocals, I can understand why people don't like them, but they're essentially an alternative instrument, another sound in the mix to capture the fury. To a lot of people, myself included, it's hard to come across as disgusted or angry while singing cleanly, but it's obviously a personal preference and the actual lyrics are the least important aspect in music to me.

I try to listen to at least 30 seconds of whatever gets posted here that I'm not already familiar with.

Most old music didn't match up to old favorites. There's a lot of new music out there and some of it is really good. It's just a matter of finding what you like. In the meantime, like always, you have to wade through a bunch of stuff that doesn't rate to find the gems. And of course one person's gems are another person's garbage.

All art is rightfully in the mind of the beholder, and for many of us... maybe we're just not feeling the same magic from this new era of music, across several genres

If GN'R or Nirvana came about today, neither would be regarded as 'dangerous'; Rock n roll itself is no longer considered dangerous. No one buys albums anymore, or even mp3s, and at 30% of a cent per Pandora stream, the 'next, most dangerous band' couldn't make bail for the early offenses at those wages, and that was that.

no, seriously...major labels shy away from the "actually dangerous with something to say" and are drawn to the more stable/consistent behavior of "pretending to be dangerous with nothing to say" (Godsmack/Nickleback/Volbeat/FFDP/etc).

They hate bands who are volatile and who may either self implode or cause a riot, seemingly at the flip of the coin..

Those days are over. But dangerous or not, those two bands had great songs and made great albums.

There are still bands who have great songs and make great albums. I listed a few above.

There are still bands who have great songs and make great albums. I listed a few above.

The last great dangerous group that had popular impact in a major country was BiS. They just weren't known much in the English speaking world.

It is not their lyrics but what they did. They attacked the huge chart topping idol industry, they trolled their fans, their videos sometimes had blood, nudity, and horrific imagery, they did nude photo shoots, they were highly varied in their sound, they collaborated with a noise rock band, and at the height of their popularity they broke up and then did a concert the very next day as ex-BiS.

Their live shows could devolve into chaos as they played the same song over and over again:

no, seriously...major labels shy away from the "actually dangerous with something to say" and are drawn to the more stable/consistent behavior of "pretending to be dangerous with nothing to say" (Godsmack/Nickleback/Volbeat/FFDP/etc).

They hate bands who are volatile and who may either self implode or cause a riot, seemingly at the flip of the coin..

Those days are over. But dangerous or not, those two bands had great songs and made great albums.

Sure wont be taking a dressing down from some guy your age, either

When you're throwing around the Black Keys as some kind of raucous rebellion, I'd beg to differ... the old days dont have to die, someone just needs to step up

I don't give a toss about racous rebellion; I just dig good songs and good records.

The list was more about bands with a "classic sound", than about any perception of rebellion (there was more than one band on the list, too).

I leave the 'dangerous rebellion' shit to wrtiers in SPIN and RS who aim their articles at kids who still believe in the ideological myth of "rock as rebellion", if that even exists anymore.

Am I jaded?

Neil Young did all that first, and he was actually able to create timeless music in the process.

Well, except for the nude photo shoots. Neil never did that.

Yes, but he did it in a genre that was known for being rebellious. Not in a genre that was known for being completely corporate controlled including contractual obligations for purity, wholesomeness, and chastity* while the idol groups were presented with a wink and a nod as sex objects to their fans.

*Idols are generally salaried employees of their talent agencies not as independent entities. This also means pay tends to be low.

I'm too jaded to even entertain the idea that a collection of teen-aged girls achieved something monumental. Forgive me

It's almost like the pure as wind-driven snow culture you describe was ripe for some counter-culture

it's prolly happened thousands of times
