ehh...Dana has spent too much time pimping womens fighting and quite frankly, the Gracie/Shamrock fiasco was a better fight than any women fight.

True. But man, that Kimbo "fight" was such a disaster.

It was so funny..those guys were gassed 30 seconds into the first round. That's twice as long as the average chick fight.

Indeed. Yeah, I've never been a fan of chick fighting. Seems so contrived.

It is not "contrived", the problem is the same problem that all of the men's divisions had 20 years ago (and still does to some degree for flyweights). The talent pool is shallow. You can't credibly argue that Jedrzejczyk isn't fun to watch.

Yeah, there's some truth to this. There's just not enough talent right now.

That makes it tough to watch most of the time, though.

Most strawweight fights, I'm just not interested in at all right now, unless its Joanna, one of the maybe 3 other decent fighters, or some newbie with a reputation in other martial arts like Muay Thai or BJJ. Those I'll watch just to see if they found someone else to throw at Joanna or not.

They still gotta grind out those strawweight fights though, to give the very few legit prospects some cans to beat up while they grow the pool if for no other reason. It might take many years, but thats why early prelims exist.

Maybe contrived isn't the right word. Forced or over hyped? To me, it seems like something trying to be pushed that is just not that entertaining. But you guys are the MMA experts, I haven't watched a fight prior to tonight since the last Lesner fight, so perhaps I'm missing out.

If you want to say that most women's MMA fights just in general are usually bad, I'm with you. I might even go as far as to say 75% of women's MMA fights right now are "affirmative action" fights where they would be buried in local promotions if they were men with their low skill level, but they need to exist in the UFC to keep the divisions alive for the good champions that the UFC has managed to uncover.

We have a few women who are legit good fighters and who are enjoyable to watch in both bantamweight and strawweight, but unfortunately they exist in an era where there's not a lot of compelling competition or opponents in those divisions. I've grown to appreciate Mighty Mouse (which is hard because men's flyweight fights are usually so bad), that dude is so damn good he deserves to be in the P4P rankings, but he suffers in popularity from a lack of competition. Same with Joanna Champion, she's my 4th-favorite UFC fighter, but the strawweight division is sadly really bad right now. At least she's got Gadelha who might be able to give her a fight later this year.

Fortunately, for those divisions that are shallow we can always stick those necessary mid-level bad affirmative action fights in the early prelims. If Demetrious or Joanna didn't exist then OK maybe we shut those divisions down, but they do exist and they are fun champions to watch, so we need to eat our vegetables and try to find good opponents for them to be tested against.

I love how Kimbo completely missed his last punch, and when out of shape Dada 5000 was stumbling away, Kimbo didn't pursue, he was like "great, I needed a rest"

edit: for those who didn't see the fight last night, here you go

Holy shit what a total lol.

My buddy told me this morning that we have thrown more punches with. 16 oz gloves on drunk off our asses on.a Saturday night.

alnorth 02-20-2016 03:37 PM

We now have a bit of info on what was going on with Dada 5000. He was severely dehydrated because he lost 40 pounds to meet the heavyweight limit of 265. Not sure how much of that was a healthy weight loss and how much was a weight cut.

Jerm 02-20-2016 03:44 PM

Jesus Christ....after last night, anyone associated with that company should be ashamed.

What a shit show...
