They just didn't have any wheels out there at all. Anzalone had some speed coming out of college back before the injuries took it. Joseph times well but doesn't seem to play fast. Campbell, for all the "See the Lions were right to take a RB and LB in the 1st round!" stuff, looked pretty awful.

They just don't have much talent at all on defense. I mean really, John Cominsky is a starter for you? Guy couldn't see the field for an AWFUL Falcons defense but he's gonna get 700 snaps in Detroit? I had no idea Tyson Alualu was even still in the league. I have no idea why - he's been terrible pretty much his entire career.

That defense is Hutchinson, McNeil, Branch and a pile of dicks.

The fact that dudes like Kindall Vildor play a lot is all you need to know...

Yeah something strikes me as not right about cousins. He wins a lot of games but is capable of putting up 100 yards against a great defense . Purdy is a quintessential game manager and system QB, and with SFs talent that's gonna make them tough. I don't think he's terrific but he's much better than a jimmy g type who plays not to lose

So you bank on shanahan turtling up on big games.

And you bank on that defense being on tilt. Because it feels like wilks is wasting a lot of that talent over there

The scaffolding is there for the defense. Just keep adding to it.

From @haydenwinks on twitter:

Purdy's career splits: top 10 vs. bottom 22 DEF

Plays: 251 vs. 651
EPA per play: +0.09 vs. +0.30
Success rate: 45% vs. 53%

Purdy has played in just 25 regular season NFL games. Not even two full seasons. He's played in 5 playoffs games, and posted a 4-1 record so far. His QBR in the playoffs is a very solid 76.0.

He's better than Garoppolo ever was, better than Kirk Cousins, far better than Herbert, way better than Tua, Dak . . .

He's not elite by any means, but he's not some JAG. This season it looks like statistically he's a top-5 QB. If he continues to play close to how he's played through his first full season as SF QB1, he'll easily be a top-10 QB next year, very close to top-5 probably.

And he hasn't played two full seasons yet. He's a long way from fully developed.

O.city 01-30-2024 11:45 AM

Better than Kirk Cousins?

Kirk has done what he's done for years in the NFL. Nah.

Says a lot about what having a QB friendly coach and system with a bunch of skill talent can do.

Explain to me why any of their guys miss games it all goes to shit though?

Go back to sucking off that savant Lamar. And Allen's 29 passing TD's and 15 rushing TD's say hi

Herbert had a 3-4 TD lead and shit it away. Garrapollo never had to come from behind to win a playoff game, Purdy already has twice.

It does. I'm not saying he's more than he is. Obviously being in Shanahan's system helps him a lot. So does having Aiyuk, Samuel, Kittle, and CMC.

But he's shown to be more capable than those other QBs I listed. He's even come back from behind int he playoffs, something Garropolo couldn't do. Something Dak hasn't been able to do.

As for why he's lost some games when key players have been out, well, again, he's extremely young/inexperienced. The ability to overcome adversity is usually a skill that comes with experience. We'll see how he handles that as his career progresses, but so far he's showing some of that ability this season.

You guys remember how Nick Bolton got robbed of his 2nd fumble-six (and probably the SBMVP) in last year's Super Bowl?

Would be pretty sweet if he goes nuclear again.

I guess the best you can really say about the Campbell pick is that they took LaPorta with their next pick and its not like there were a lot of great defensive players taken in between.

I think it would be better for them to have Deonte Banks than Jack Campbell, for instance. Myles Murphy would be an upgrade on Cominsky, IMO, and a nice long-term asset. And man, moving up a spot or two to get Christian Gonzalez would've been awesome for them.

I think Campbell was just a bad pick born of wrongheaded thinking. If the guy turned out to be Luke Kuechly, I'd be wrong. But he's not.

Sure...he came back against a young Packers team and a Lions team that woudln't get out of their own way. If the Chiefs play like they played in the last 3 playoff games, and history shows that they more than likely will, then we should beat the 49ers.

The good thing is that Bolton now gets two weeks of rest because he's had moments where he still looks injured.
