On the subject of places that no longer exists, does anyone else have fond memories of ShowBiz Pizza?

Yep, three HiBoys still open in Independence. One near 291 & RD Mize, one @ 40 hwy and Blue Ridge blvd, one up on 24 hwy east of Sugar Creek

I remember going to the Show-Biz on Noland road when I was a kid...I remember it being right by the Venture store. Birthday Party's and what not. I don't remember the food, just the Animatronic band (Jim Bob?) and the Arcade. Good Times.

Yeah, I think that was the one. Blue Ridge close to 350 Highway if I recall correctly. Been awhile. :)

Even as a 10 yr old who couldn't admit that anything is cool or sweet, I had to acknowledge that damn commercial was adorable.

My oldest was 4 when my twins were newborns and I could have absolutely seen her doing something like that. They're almost 2 now and she just fawns over them still.

I do remember the pizza being ass but playing the holy hell out of the TMNT Arcade Game. That and the X-Men game. We'd get 3 or 4 of us mannin' the sticks and managed to beat them both. My memory is that X-Men was friggen hard.

We used to go to the one at Shawnee Mission Parkway and Quivira. I don’t remember what the pizza was like either, but at that young age there wasn’t really such a thing as bad pizza. And that place was more about the games and the show anyway.

It was Rembrants. The other place on the east side of Metro North just off Barry Rd was Ivy's. Ivy's had really good food and was family owned.

Forgot about Ivy's.

We went there a time or two and yeah, I remember that place being fantastic.

Then again, I remember feeling like big shit when we went to Applebee's so that doesn't mean a whole lot...

tooge 10-02-2019 03:07 PM

Thats funny. I was the same way. Back in 1990 or 1991, I was still in school and after a big exam, a bunch of us would celebrate by going to the new Applebees. Big menu, beer, tv's. LOL. Applebees is shit.

O.city 10-02-2019 03:08 PM

All the guys I went to Dental school with from KC were obsessed with Strouds. It was good for sure, but growing up in southern mo/northern Ark where I did, with the family I did, that kind of cooking was pretty normal for a Sunday.

I went there a couple of years ago for the first time in probably 10 years. There's just never a reason, with every option available, to think "y'know, Applebees sounds good..." I think they were advertising $1 margaritas and the wife likes her margs so she made the call.

And when it was over, all I could think was "Y'know, they should change their slogan to 'Applebees - we serve food'.

Because it wasn't even bold enough to call bad. It was just...there. There was nothing that would qualify as above average. Nothing so odious as to make it inedible. It was just...sustenance. "Applebees - you can eat this"

Yeah, our mutual acquaintance has this sort of austere southern carriage to him. I guess I didn't realize that Thayer is essentially Little Savannah.

Don't think so. Never went there if it was.

We went to TeoCali mostly as it was walking distance right across the road and the owner was always trying to bang some of the girls in the school so he'd open at like 9 am if we wanted him to after a final or something.

Seems as KC had a bunch of chicken places. I'll go back a bit in time that I remember - Wishbone Restaurant and Green Parrot. A little newer - Drumstick Restaurants.

I've been to Stroud's once - it's not as good as those places I had mentioned - but where as Stround's you'll see a lot of plates w/ standard sides (mashers, greenbeans) - the Pitt Kansas spots like to serve German Potato salad and another side is a simple meatless spaghetti w/ red sauce - surprisingly the spaghetti goes very well w/ the chicken.

Often glazed instead of a mayo/mustard emulsion. Often served warm rather than cold. Often sliced potatoes rather than diced.

That's, as you noted, warm German potato salad (with bacon grease, sugar, etc.). The SEK version is cold and uses different ingredients.

I used to live in Germany. Pretty much every little town has its own beer, wine, sausage, and salads (potato, cabbage, carrot, etc.).

Literally you can travel 20 minutes and have the same exact meal with completely different ingredients.

As for potato salad, despite the above, it was almost always served warm. Also, mayo was pretty much non-existent. Lot's of mustard but no mayo.

No because scalloped potatoes have cheese.

The glaze is generally made from sugar, vinegar, and bacon grease.

Have you ever had Dutch wilted lettuce? Same glaze.

Stroud’s is so overrated besides the cinnamon rolls.

Chicken and mashed are way too bland. Just my opinion....

(Still not as bad a term as "boneless wings")

Simply Red 09-22-2020 07:17 PM

It's not mayo based - it's more of a vinaigrette/vinegar type - often you'll see poppy seeds in it - it's a little bitter but quite refreshing in the summer mos. It's delicious w/ fried chicken, works out well.

It's a mobius strip of adaptive naming.

Chicken fried steak was steak fried [like chicken], except they also deboned it, pounded it flat and served it over potatoes with gravy on top.

So now chicken fried chicken is chicken fried [like chicken], deboned, pounded flat and served over potatoes with gravy on top. [technically, it should be southern style chicken Milanese]

And boneless wings are officially saucy nugs.

Simply Red 09-22-2020 07:41 PM

it's a way for restaurants that offer both beef and chicken under the same cooking procedure to distinguish between the two.

Simply Red 09-22-2020 07:42 PM

I think one place used it - and it sort of 'caught on.'

A "million a year" is rolling the customers right through. They are open 10.5 hours a day. So averaging right at 261 customers per hour.

gblowfish 09-23-2020 10:08 AM

Stroud's chicken strips are the absolute best. They also had wonderful fried prawns and great charcoal cooked pork chops. The gravy is absolutely fabulous and so are the green beans and cinnamon rolls.

I've had chicken down around Pittsburg, KS before. I didn't go to Chicken Mary's, it was some place with an italian name that had chicken and other stuff. Think it was this place in Frontenac, KS: http://www.bartosidlehour.com/

I get tastier fried chicken at Bojangles or Lee’s Fried Chicken in Richmond. I honestly do not miss this place that much back home.

Not baked. Sometimes boiled, sometimes pan-fried. At least that's my experience.

Depends on the area you're in. In Schwabia, where I lived, a lot of stuff was boiled, even bratwurst.

A lot of places pan fry stuff though.

Randallflagg 09-23-2020 12:43 PM

I've eaten at Strouds a few times. OK is about all I could ever give them. There WAS however a place in Shawnee Mission (back in the day) called "KT Fryers" that probably had the best fired chicken/chicken fried steak I have eaten at - this coming from a Southern boy who grew up with damned good chicken.

Unfortunately, the place burned to the ground. No more KT Fryers.....

But yeah, Strouds doesn't really do it for me....

vonBobo 09-23-2020 12:52 PM

I too like the strouds chicken fried chicken. Brown and Lowe has a nice chicken too. But Gus's is the best chicken in town right now.

Or.. get yourself a candy thermometer to manage the oil temps, a meat thermometer to pull the chicken immediately when done, and a buttermilk recipe full of seasoning and it will ruin all other restaurant chicken for life. I'm a pretty poor chef, but I can consistently turn out fried chicken that has my friends and family wondering why they have never tasted chicken so good.

KT Fryers was the Stroud's model. Same menu, same pan fry, same family style serving. Pretty sure the owner was with Strouds for a long time before setting out on his own. Grandma's out at the raceway tried the same but had HORRIBLE service.

Over the years, been to Strouds about 20x, KT about 6-8 [would've been more if it hadn't burned down], and Grandma's once.

Every meal at the old Troost Strouds under the underpass ranked among the best. KT's was just about as good, and had the plus of being <1mi from [my] grandma [not the grandma restaurant], just not quite as good as the very best at the Troost location.

If I made an official top-10, it'd probably be 1-3 Strouds Troost, then 4-10 evenly split between KT and Stroud Troost.

The last couple at Fairway were just OK, but they closed that one.

Grandma's wasn't so much bad food as ATROCIOUS service. We left ANGRY, not just disappointed but ANGRY, and they closed within 6 months so it was probably a chronic problem

Incidently, there was about 3 years in the early 00s where there was a Strouds clone not far from me here in St.L [can't remember the name]. Ironically, their biggest different was my personal favorite thing at Strouds, instead of the slow-cooked green beans with all that schmaltz, they had a 'fancy' haricort-verts almondine side. It was good, but not in keeping with the rest of the menus.

seclark 09-23-2020 02:11 PM

my mom used to make german potato salad whenever the family would all get together. start making it the day before...by the morning it was done the whole fricking house smelled like the sewer had backed up. i'd wake up gagging, thinking, "geeze, i gotta get out of this house and get some fresh air!".

her mom, brothers and sister would eat the hell out of it, but us kids wouldn't touch it...we'd joke that the flies wouldn't even land on it. damn, it stunk when she cooked it.
her family could brew some beer, but they burned meat and ruined taters, God bless them.
sec

cooper barrett 09-23-2020 02:42 PM

Been there eaten that. They were in the Waldo Shopping Center but that was 15 years ago. (Gary) Berbiglia's Roost, could fry up some dammed good chicken but the place (think Pete LaCock's Fuddrukers) was short lived.

The hamburger steak with gravy and mushrooms is the best thing on their menu (IMO of course).

Fried Chicken isn't southern, you all like to take credit for everything. Fried Green Tomatoes = not southern Sawmill breakfast gravy= not southern. So grow up, will ya?

We have Lee's Famous Fried Chicken in Indy, Louisville, and Cincy area

700 calories for a piece? Really?

Anyone going to mention RC's in Martin City?(not considered Waldo yet)

Living on the south side of KC I've eaten there a lot. I've always liked their chicken.

Can you expand on this? I'm thinking of trying to make some homemade fried chicken.

Agree. Gus’s is dynamite. What hurts them is location, just down the street from the original Joe’s, so no one makes it that far to check them out. If they were in some Johnson County location, people would know all about them.

I question your judgement on THAT Gus's location.

Been there, have friends who's jusgement I trust and they AND I think it sucks. I suggest you try a fresh bucket of Churches from a poor neighborhood.

If you only like your chicken from a place with great BBQ nearby, try the Neiman rd location.
