not so much a 'must watch' but a new aussie dramadie called 'the messenger' which was filmed predominately in our small little town of Lithgow, NSW.

the dry humour is par for the course :D

If you divorce yourself from the actual historical figures, it's pretty good. At least to the extent the characters became compelling. Ultimately, I ended up really giving a shit about the characters and the (historically inaccurate) story.

And the battle scenes are good. Really good. Worth the wait.

In short I came for the assling insults, stayed for the characters.

Just got to the Aethelwold blinding scene.

They are really going to wrap up Barry with a 30 minute finale!? Okay I guess. Damn, Season 4 was too good.

35 minutes but still. I’m going to miss this show.

jjchieffan 05-27-2023 08:54 PM

I don't know if it's going to be a must watch or not, but a new series is starting next week called Stars on Mars hosted by William Shattner and has celebrities basically playing survivor in a simulated Mars environment. It's going to have NFL players in the first season. I think Marshawn Lynch and Richard Sherman. Not sure if it will be any good, but I think that I'll have to check out a couple of episodes and see.

Unique ending. Great final season. Finale was the first recent episode that I didn’t have a couple true LOL moments but they wrapped things up well and creatively.

Sad that it’s over but I liked the Finale, could it have been better? Yeah but all in all an excellent Final Season.

Yes.

Absolutely.

It's fantastic.

But it isn't a light easy watch. I ended up turning on CC solely for the fact I didn't have to use as much brainpower to decode the accent.

Watch it. There is literally no downside other than you'll walk around wanting to yell PEAKY ****-IN BLINDAS, and it turns out that isn't necessarily socially acceptable.

It was unique for sure. It was definitely a callout to those who latched on and enjoyed the power fantasy of Barry's first 2 seasons (and in general to people in the audience who glom on to anti-hero power fantasy stories like Breaking Bad or The Shield). Hader basically said "here you go sickos". I knew right away Gene made a huge mistake
Spoiler!
. All in all, I still thought season 4 was great, but I could have done without the moralizing of the last two seasons from Hader, who had crafted such a brilliant universe.

mr. tegu 05-30-2023 09:49 AM

Just finished The Wire. Amazing show. If you are one of those like me who hadn’t watched it yet do it. You won’t regret it. So many deep and complex themes along with great execution.

Yeah, one of my favorite shows ever.

It goes up and down a bit, I think it was the third season with the Russian family that was damn near impossible to follow. But season 4 was just so damn good that it sucked me right back in and the momentum was more than enough to power it through an up and down season 5 and very satisfying season 6.

So Seasons 1 and 2 will be more than enough to keep you watching - don't let season 3 bury you - season 4 and beyond is good but really all 6 seasons are worth it just for season 4 alone, IMO. It was just outstanding.

BTW, it's funny that there's so many "series finales" this year due to the writers strike. The producers want to wrap it up before everything goes to shit.

Pretty sure that all of these shows had planned to end long before the writers' strike was an inevitability.

Right. All these have been written, filmed, edited, and released.

What the writers were working on in terms of TV won't be released for at least a year.

I'm not sure I'd go with 'unique' unless you mean the final 5 minutes. And really, I think that was done just to satirize hollywood writ large; something that Gene's entire character (and Sally's character arc) has done from the jump.

But I do think they landed the plane well. It was a satisfying conclusion. I'm not sure there's anything I'd have done differently except maybe:

Spoiler!

ChiefAshhole1056 05-31-2023 09:52 PM

Yeah, I think I was referring to the final 5 minutes. Was just a nice little twist.

And agreed on your spoiler. He deserved better. Absolutely hysterical character the entire way through.

I think the best part of the final season was Fuches Raven stuff. That part in the prison when he was giving out nicknames just slayed me. Then picking up the barista when he got out of prison. Awesome.

It's hilarious on the one hand but on the other, it's both scary and sad how closely it follows the actual tech industry. Too many times I've laughed at a joke that I only understand because I've lived it.

I rewatched Queen's Gambit because the Anya Taylor-Joy conversation stirred my interest.

I forgot how damn good that show is.

I had only watched it the first time through. It's worth a re-watch because there is a shitton of nuance and depth that I blew by because I was trying to figure out where the story was going. The performances were ****ing excellent. Even if they were filled with pain and trauma. I really really enjoyed the show. Even if it isn't the happiest story.

Most of the story points aren't my bag. Women, orphans, chess, the 60s, drugs, abuse, meh nothing gets me jumping up and down. But they created compelling characters and told a compelling story. And it was awesome.

Just goddamned compelling television.

So, I’ve binged Barry over the past few weeks. Wrapped up last night.

Loved the whole thing, because I thought early on “Oh, this is Barry’s version of the song Hook.”

I think the plan the whole way was to draw people in and then make subtle jabs at the anti-hero thing.

Stephen Root is pretty underrated. Fiches, man, what a character.

There were some tough moments for me (seeing how John was raised brought up some traumatic memories), but all in all a really fun ride.

They weren't really that subtle...

And again, maybe I'm just jaded by listening to Hader talk about the character, but the feeling I got was the first season was the tone the initially wanted, then the audience reaction to Barry was so strong that Hader recoiled from it. He seemed to think that it would be easier to turn audiences on Barry (I think the Chris Incident was where he expected everything to fall into place) and when it didn't work out that way, he just kept getting darker and darker. He was just rolling up bigger newspapers every week to whack the viewer on the nose with.

I kinda wish I could 'unhear' Hader's take on the characters because in the end, it made every decision he made about as subtle as a sledgehammer for me.

I didn't even watch any Barry commentary from Hader, and it was painfully obvious Hader grew to loathe his creation and America's preoccupation with violence. The first 2 seasons were dark comedy genius, the 3rd season was a fart in the wind, and while I enjoyed the 4th season for its well executed episodes,he really sucked the fun out of the room whenever Barry was on screen. I suppose "The Message" was more personally important than delivering on the premise of "hitman joins theater group and wacky hijinks ensue".

For the record, 'Father and Son' by Cat Stevens has never NOT worked in a montage to wrap up a movie/series.

Lasso used it well - GOTG did it best.

https://youtu.be/w-re1n6i-Xk

(Can't get an embed to work)

Then again, GOTG did a lot of stuff best - man that was a good little franchise from completely out of left field. Never would've thought Andy Dwyer would've had it in him.

Buehler445 06-07-2023 10:03 PM

Treason on Netflix is a nice little spy thriller.

Normally the shit is pretty easy to see, but this did a decent enough job of keeping the twists hidden. You have to suspend some disbelief, but not so much that it takes you out of it.

Olga Kurylenko still does it for me. She’s getting older and they tried (pretty successfully) to make her look haggard, but for whatever reason she still trips my trigger.

I checked out "Bupkis" on Peacock, expecting nothing. It stars Pete Davidson playing himself, Joe Pesci as his grandpa, and Edie Falco as his mom. Plenty of appearances by other stars as well.

I'm 3 episodes in, and right off the bat it's ****ing hilarious. The first scene in the first episode sets the tone.

It's worth watching the first 30 minute episode to see if it's for you.

I have the final season of Saul to watch.

The problem is that they just went so long between seasons over those last 3 that it really killed the momentum for me. I've never bothered to watch the last one despite religiously watching the first several. I gotta believe they did a nice job with it and there are so many questions that could be answered. I should watch it.

That was me. My brother got me to give it a shot, I didn’t want to at first, but decided to watch a few episodes and just couldn’t stop after that and give it a rewatch a few months later. After you finish season 3, the main actor does an interview that I was lucky to stumble across. This interview is a bonus if you were also a fan of The Sopranos.

Agreed on this.

Also agreed on True Detective S1. Nothing, NOTHING is as good as that. Not The Wire. Nothing. S2 was very meh but it seemed worse because of the standards of S1. S3 was actually really good and I'm excited for S4 with Jodie Foster.

Have you watched Fargo (the TV version)? That's just outside my top 5 but stacks up in pure enjoyment against anything.

Can't remember if it has been discussed here, but I've been watching Shrinking and I really like it. Ford and Jessica Williams are up here throwing 100MPH the whole time. I'm not the biggest Jason Segal fan, but he's hanging in there, and it works for what they're trying to do. They're going after some godDAMN serious subject matter...with a comedy (?) and it seems to be working. So far (4 episodes in) they're doing a decent job of balancing the goofball shit with serious stuff, and delineating the two.

I admittedly wasn't expecting much, but it has me hooked. We'll see how they navigate the storylines, but I'm pretty impressed so far.

I was a little reluctant to watch this show only because my friend was killed in the 1983 Marine Barracks bombing and I thought they were going to show more details of that, but I’m glad they didn’t. Glad I watched it. I always enjoy Dermot Mulroney‘s movies/TV shows. He did a great job in this. I had to google the CIA agent he was portraying to see what actually happened to him.

Just finished The Night Agent. I was pleasantly surprised. They didn't reinvent the wheel of political thrillers, but it kept me pulled in the entire way through. Would recommend.

Glad I watched it. I always enjoy Dermot Mulroney‘s movies/TV shows. He did a great job in this. I had to google the CIA agent he was portraying to see what actually happened to him.

I thought it was a phenomenal true story that I knew absolutely nothing about. I grew up hearing about the marine barracks bombing but clearly didn't know the backstory or the significance of it. I only wish this had been more than 4 episodes as it was really solid.

And sorry for the loss of your friend - I can totally understand how that might have made you more reluctant to watch it at the outset.

I enjoyed Shrinking on Apple TV+ as well. That series went by too fast.

3 episodes into the crowded room on apple. Tom Holland can act his ass off. This is the third of his I’ve seen where he plays a complete degen flawlessly. Cherry? I think. And one other on Netflix

One gripe with the crowded room ..
Spoiler!

Has Apple taken the #2 spot for original series?

HBO is obviously the top dog. And then I think it has to be Apple, with Prime coming in third. I barely even log into Netflix nowadays, and will probably eventually drop it

The Righteous Gemstones starts off great.

I’m sick and tired of seeing you moping around the house all day pretending like your Born on the Fourth of July or somethin’.

(Entire) Season 2 of The Bear released yesterday.

Picks up just where the first left off and is so good.

If you haven't watched this show, do it. Now.

Ohh, you have to watch it.

It was the best season IMO and wrapped things up nicely.

The BB/BCS universe is my favorite though.

3 episodes left - gonna be all 'Gene' episodes.

I can see where this is going to go and I think they rushed the pacing on the BB universe so they could slow to a crawl in the 'modern' era. Just seems like a structure mistake. I could've spent another episode or two with the real-time impact of everything that went down. I'm happy hanging a little longer with Mike and Gus. Cramming that into a single episode and then moving on to a post BB universe seems like its burying the lede.

They dropped the whole thing?

I thought they were going week by week. I need to make this happen. I couldn't believe how into this show I was.

My mom watched the entire thing and liked it more.

I'm 3 episodes in and I can completely see it.

I feel like I want 100 more seasons of this.

(And bonus: I move to Chicago tomorrow and this helps get me hyped.)

Season 2 Episode 6.

OMG. Jaw-dropping amazing. One of the best of the year with some amazing all-star additions to the cast. Legendary.

Plowed through Silo on AppleTV+. Excited for the S1 finale next week

It's a sort of a crime investigation in a post apocalyptic setting where it's also unraveling the mysteries of how & why current society exists. It has a large cast with a mix of people I'm not familiar with and names and faces most would recognize but aren't huge stars like Will Patton.

Read the books when I saw they were making a series out of it.

Watched the first couple episodes of the series to see how they built the universe - man the pacing is slooooooooow.

Yeah, ended about like I thought it would.

Honestly, I'd have been fairly content just ending it after episode 10. The 'Gene' wrapup just felt telegraphed and fairly boring.

Spoiler!

Great universe and I understand why they finished it like they did. But I don't think anyone NEEDS to have watched it, honestly.

I'd probably agree with all that, but I'm glad they did it. If for no other reason to show that something besides a lowest common denominator schlock shitbox will work.

Do something well and I'm here for it. And this was that.
