Hmm. Probably Idol Metal or Idolcore. Advanced? Not sure about that. It is different then you would normally get from a mainstream metal band. The fans are about the same though as Japan really sees no difference other than idol in general is seen as a little bit more nerdy than regular bands like say a Maximum the Hormone, Scandal, or Band Maid. Then again regular mainstream Idol does dominate the charts there...

I wish I could get into it more and share your enthusiasm, because there's certainly a lot of that

Trust me, there is a lot of stuff and plenty of it simply isn't my cup of tea. I just listen and if something catches my ear I will look further. I listen to a whole bunch of western music as well. I have a job where most of my communication with others is through e-mail so I can sit at my desk and listen to music all day.

I would suggest probably Necronomidol and of course Babymetal as a beginners intro into the whole alt Idol world. Necronomidol's producer is an American and many of their videos have English subtitles. They tend to stay in the metal and darkwave genres.

I’ve always loved that southern rock sound! That was such a good cd.

I like it. Like a combination of Dream Theater and Gojira. Are all their songs instrumentals?

I'm friends with Audley Freed, their guitarist - he lives in Nashville with his wife Jen, and both are super nice.

I met him after the Cry of Love days, when he was with the Black Crowes. Nowadays, he tours as live band director for the Dixie Chicks, and he's also toured with Frampton and Joe Perry's solo band.

The Cry of Love album "Brother" is a constant - "Highway Jones", "Peace Pipe", "Carnival", "Bad thing", some great playing and fantastic songwriting on that one.

Robert, the bass player wound up joining the band that calls itself Skynyrd for awhile, now he's in the Bottle Rockets. Don't know him as well, though. Johnny Colt from the Crowes replaced him in Skynyrd. Johnny's a buddy as well.

Still unpacking, doing the ipod shuffle until I get my real stereo hooked up.

Hit me, DJ Roomba!!

I do believe they are a strictly instrumental band

What GC was spinning in 2018

Here is the best of what I was spinning in 2018.

Honorable Mentions:
Everyday - Billie Idle
Sick Idols - Melon Batake a GoGo
Non-Tie Up - BiSH
Monster - Aldious
Nebagiba - You'll Melt More
Lightning Strikes - Judas Priest
Rainer Fog - Alice in Chains
Autonomous nerve on business trip - PEDRO
Secret Maiko Lips - BAND-MAIKO(BAND-MAID)

15) Raise Your Banner - Within Temptation.
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ZrMGGMNTKa8" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

A return to form for Within Temptation. Their previous release was more poppier but the two singles release this year off of Resist have been harder and darker. More like the Heart of Everything album.

14)Sky of Rubble - Yanakoto Sotto Mute

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/tauEABlurvc" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

A group I haven't posted about yet but they have a great grungier poppy rock sound.

13)Firepower - Judas Priest

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/6QtjdDiMLVg" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Firepower was a good album but the end is nigh for Judas Priest. The title track is my favorite off the album. Halford proves even nearing 70 he can still scream better than 98% of the singers out there.

12)Domination - BAND-MAID

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/xmxEuQXTHUU" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Band-Maid really grew this year releasing probably the best album of the year and going on a short world tour while also headlining a small festival named after them in Japan. Domination is the title track of the album World Domination and won't be the only song from that album on the list.

11)P.S.R.I.P - Billie Idle

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/l-5bJ6Syweo" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Billie Idle picked up Pour Lui this year as she joined her former BiS group mates. So far their new releases with Lui haven't been as punky as Billie Idle's other stuff and P.S.R.I.P found its way on to my playlists more often.

10)Cockroach - Screaming Heana Cat

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/NVICy6AtGgc" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

A collaboration album from Screaming 60s, who will collaborate with almost any rock band in Japan, and The Heana Cat a guitar, keyboards, and bass duo who play a wide variety of rock music.

KCUnited 12-20-2018 04:21 PM

What if Heart and Black Sabbath had done a side project in the 70s?

Drug Cult

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/HZS-1qyBL9I" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

What GC was spinning in 2018 (Pt 2)

9)She's Kerosene - The Interrupters
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Yq2jJLswL8I" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

This one might be nostalgia but sounding like Rancid, Reel Big Fish, and Operation Ivy is not a bad thing in my book. We all need a little ska in our lives.

8)Dahila - You'll Melt More
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/N2sZTr7F2Y4" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

You'll Melt More is a pretty diverse sounding idol unit but all of it is good. Dahila is their take on the late 90s early 00s pop punk sound. They are also known for their videos whether big productions like this one or trippy little indie videos probably made for less than $200.

7)Zombie - Bad Wolves
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/9XaS93WMRQQ" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The only cover on the list. This was originally supposed to feature Dolores O'Riordan singing vocals but she passed away before she could. The band released the song in it's original form as a tribute to her. It is a great cover and is darker than the original.

6)Great fXXXking my world - Burst Girl (Not filter evasion, that is the actual title of the song)
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/joMTu0aM4qA" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Formed from the ashes of the idolcore unit Guso Drop, Burst Girl went full indie making their own releases. Their first single distanced themselves from their previous sound leaning more to East Bay Punk than the hardcore their previous group was doing.
