jjchieffan 03-03-2018 07:31 PM

Arkansas came out pretty tough in the second half. But that one possession where they got called for 3 quick fouls hurt them pretty bad. They had to dial it back a notch defensively and the Tigers were able to take advantage of that. Arkansas doesn't foul there, it's probably a closer game.

jjchieffan 03-03-2018 08:10 PM

So I guess it looks like the Tigers will play either Georgia, Candy, or Ole Miss first, followed by Kentucky assuming they win. They should, but they already lost to Ole Miss once this season. It would be nice if Porter Jr plays, but that's probably not going to happen.

TomBarndtsTwin 03-03-2018 08:35 PM

Doubt MPJ plays now. Figured if we were gonna see him, he would have played in one of the last two. Seems like he’s made a business decision (which I don’t necessarily blame him for).

That said, solid win tonight. Mizzou probably locked into the 8-9 seed now. I suppose they could drop to 10 if they put on an ugly performance in their first SEC Tourney game. Probably not much of a chance to improve their seeding for the Big Dance, unless they go on a run (i.e. at least get to the Final). If they did that, they could slide into a #7.

All in all, a pretty good year so far and a nice turnaround for Mizzou basketball in their first year under CM. Especially considering he was using mainly freshman and leftovers. Solid job.

Now, can we go get some ****ing guards that can handle the ball for next year?

Ramey, Pinson, and Watson would give Mizzou a huge injection of length and athleticism on he wing next year. Decent odds it happens now.

I haven’t paid much attention to basketball recruiting lately. How good are these guys?

jjchieffan 03-03-2018 08:41 PM

Hopefully they can climb into that 7 spot. I really would rather not see them face a number one seed in round 2. But I think that is probably exactly what happens. I'm sure that you're right about Porter Jr too. Rumors that he might play because he's likely dropped out of the top 5 in the draft had my hopes up. But, like you said, if he was going to play in the tournament, he probably would have played today to shake off some rust.

KChiefs1 03-03-2018 08:44 PM

6-7 seed has always presented the best opportunity to go far in the dance for seeds outside the top 4.

TomBarndtsTwin 03-03-2018 08:47 PM

IF Mizzou could win that first 8/9 game, I’d love them to play the #1 because it will probably be Kansas (you know the NCAA is dying to match them up). Perfect scenario; huge underdog, everything to gain, nothing to lose. And, as an added bonus, it will piss off Mr. Bill all to hell. :D

I was wrong. The guys I know and heard from were wrong (two different sources, even).

Everyone thought he was playing today. Until he announced he wasn't.

I'm done trying to predict what will happen with him.

You are correct.

Thursday in the SEC Tournament.

They really need him with only 7 scholarship players on the team. He will step up & lead the Tigers.

From PowerMizzou:

Martin says he would be surprised if Porter plays 30 minutes. He will not start. "We'll go from there."

Martin calls Porter "a presence" on the floor.

Porter told Martin yesterday that he is for sure ready to go. Says "it had to be completely up to him. ... I didnt want him to feel any pressure."

Martin said Porter told him "coach I want to help the team."

Martin says the game reps will get Porter back to 100 percent. Says he is completely healthy.

Martin says he wants Porter to. have the same mentality when he returns that he had when he left the lineup.

Martin laughs when asked if Porter could help the team cut down on turnovers. Says Porter should help the team handle the ball.

Martin says he took the approach that Porter was not coming back when he initially got hurt. Says that was between Mike and the trainer.

Martin says he has not told the team about Porter's return yet, does not know yet if Porter has told his teammates.

Looks like we'll be playing Georgia tomorrow.

jjchieffan 03-07-2018 08:01 PM

Beat Georgia tomorrow, then we play Kentucky. We beat them at home, but lost at UK. Who wins in St Louis? Can Porter make the difference and get the win? I think that he can.

'Hamas' Jenkins 03-07-2018 08:46 PM

I'm not concerned about Mizzou winning the SEC tourney, but I would like to see them win at least two games just so Porter can get decent run with the rest of the team.

I just want to see them win enough games to get out of that 8/9 seed territory. I really don't want to see them facing Kansas in the round of 32. A 7 seed would greatly increase the chance for a sweet 16 appearance

I really don't understand how Kansas could get a #1 seed when they are 24-7 in the regular season and their best RPI win is over Kentucky. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it happened, but there are seven or eight teams, at least, with a better resume than Kansas.

Shit, Michigan isn't going to get anywhere near a #1 and they have three wins better than any of Kansas' w/ the same number of losses.

duncan_idaho 03-07-2018 10:37 PM

If they play Kentucky on Friday, Jarred Vanderbilt isn't playing. That's a big loss for them - he was the difference in the two games.

My bad. Saw he had a high ankle sprain and a comment from the team that they hoped he would play again this year.

Vanderbilt is a real difference-maker. His energy and athleticism and toughness make Kentucky a very different team, IMO.

Vanderbilt might be the most important player on this team over Knox and Gilgeous-Alexander. Additionally, his ceiling might be better than higher than both of them.

He is a rebounding machine with a high motor. If he can improve his shot, he will be remarkable both in college and the NBA.

ROFL. Why? They didn't get their usual bang for their buck with this year's team.

I never, ever, EVER count any chickens when it comes to Mizzou. But I'd love to play KU in the NCAAs. Even if Mizzou lost, it would be great for college basketball. And if Mizzou doesn't draw KU, I'd love to see Wichita State beat them again.

Have you started selling WSU shirts beside the Bucknell merch on campus?

This year's KU team could easily fall to both a MPJ Mizzou or WSU. This team might have the lowest floor of any KU team in the Self era.

They also have a ceiling high enough to take anyone in the country. I see it as equally likely that this KU team falls to a 15 as it is for us to go to the Final Four again.

Aside from that, Mizzou is getting good looks, they just aren't falling. Hopefully, they can hit in the second and we see less of Brett Rau.

Mainly because some of the players on the floor should be playing at Pitt State.
