No you couldn't have. Berry is a post june 1st cut. His savings don't kick in till June 2. There's literally no cap relief till then, and by then Mathieu is off the market obviously.

Right now the trade is looking like:
Houston, Ford, Berry (if you can even count him)

Honey Badger, Okafor, Damien Wilson, Quartey-Jones, $15M still left to spend (likely 5-6 guys who will start next year)
2nd round 2020 pick (may be used for a trade up in this year's draft)
[*Edit - no comp pick for Houston]

I think the odds are pretty good that we'll be better off.

Sassy Squatch 03-14-2019 09:55 PM

Why would we get a comp pick for Houston.

I'm with you. I would much rather have one outstanding player, than 3 average to below average players. I don't understand this quantity over quality mindset at all, it's not how you build a championship winning team. We were bad on defense with these players before because we had one of the worst DCs in the NFL, the answer is not to gut the defense of talent and replace it with a higher quantity of lesser talented players for the same amount of money.

As of now, if we don't make any major $10M+ moves before June 1st, then we'd either likely get a comp pick for Houston or for Morse (and we'd only get that comp pick for Morse because Houston neutralized Honey Badger).

Sassy Squatch 03-14-2019 10:06 PM

We cut Houston. He doesn't factor into the comp picks whatsoever.

Iconic 03-14-2019 10:07 PM

Houston was released so I'm pretty certain we can't get anything for him in the form of a comp pick. But definitely Nelson, Bailey, Ware, and Morse.

But their formula is wacky and it also factors in amount gained + amount lost so maybe Chiefzilla is talking about that aspect.

We're getting players like Alex Okafor for 6 million a year and you expect to get 5-6 starters for 15m? We're gonna get one brokedick CB for almost the entirety of it.

Oh wait... nevermind. I forgot that he was cut. Editing my previous post.

We cut the big 3. End up with honey badger, okafor, wilson, quartey jones. For $15M, we likely end up with 1-2 more starters. Of that list, 5-6 will likely start.

Yes please ignore the star safety, the 2nd round draft pick, the depth OLB, HB, S, and the fact that we still have 15m+ left to delegate towards another big signing.
