I got absolutely no snow in Shawnee from latest storm

Spare a thought for overseas fans who like me will be watching the game at 1am in the blistering cold at 4 degrees Celsius.

I was asked if I was going to KC for the game since the tix were so cheap.

I have clothes that could handle the cold, but getting there would be terrible.

So I am going to sit my ass at home-enjoy the three day weekend, drink, and stay warm.
Wife took kid 2 to Philly for move in. I had to stay home.

Buehler445 01-12-2024 04:34 PM

Welp, i guess they adjusted the forecast to lower the ****ing hammer on us. It was like -5 as the lowest low a few days ago. We had -20 a few years ago. My ****ing dad got in the pickup to come to the farm and decided it was too cold, drove around, went by some feedyard and laughed at them trying to fix a waterer and went home. -20 is ****ing cold.

My uncle, who passed away a few years ago, would tell me stories about growing up on a farm in northern Missouri in the 50s. They lived a mile and a half from the bus stop, and he had to walk it, every day, regardless of the weather. The road went up and down several hills, and no matter how hot or cold it was, whether it was raining, snowing, hailing, whatever, he walked it. The man I would later call grandpa was his step-father, and apparently didn't like my uncle very much, because he would NEVER drive him, no matter how severe conditions were. Three feet of snow? 10 below zero? Raining sideways? **** you.

Good luck bitching to him about going out in the weather. :D

Shiver Me Timbers 01-12-2024 09:12 PM

Channel 2 out here in the Denver metro area has a counter on the screen "Time Below Freezing". It is 20 F'n degrees right now. How about "Hours below zero".
If it bleeds it leads and if it is cold our "Happy" governor declares a state of emergency.

displacedinMN 01-12-2024 09:19 PM

I have had very little snow. 10 miles away, 1 inch.

40 miles away--3 inches. Quite the cut off.

This is funny: Will Alaska Be Warmer than Kansas City?

https://www.kansascity.com/news/weat...284174868.html

Probably will be this weekend. We will be getting the usual low twenties for the high but then, we've already had a pretty good cold snap right after Christmas. Didn't hit 0 for a few days. And the end of January is typically the coldest part of the year so we have that to look forward to. Frankly, you all are getting what we typically get. Sunspot activity is diminished, which weakens the jet stream and pushes it east and south. That allows the cold Siberian air that typically hits my state to push further into the contiguous US instead of staying in Canada or the northern US. So just consider this a little gift from Russia and Alaska.

If you're going to the game, wear layers, especially for your feet. If you can, a thin layer of merino wool socks with a much thicker layer of wool socks can work wonders. SmartWool is a great brand of sock. Polypropelene is a good base layer. Under Armor makes some good base layers as does Carhartt. If you want to be really warm, get a good base layer for your legs, like long underwear. THen go to Cabela's or Bass Pro Shop and buy fleece wader liners. They're designed to be worn under fishing waders in cold weather. Standing in glacial-fed water all day, even in water-proof liners, can get very cold so thick liners really keep your legs warm. You wear those two layers and then your pants and you will definitely be warm.

Stay warm my friends.

Frazod 01-12-2024 09:27 PM

It's funny - when it gets really cold up here in the Chicago area, I sometimes check to see what the temperature is in Juneau. Most of the time, Juneau is warmer. Sometimes significantly so.

I assume that will be the case tomorrow when the deep freeze hits.

Juneau is not really 'cold' by Alaska standards. It's notably farther South than Anchorage or even Fairbanks and its surrounded by water, which moderates the temp. Anchorage is typically notably colder than Juneau and Fairbanks is even colder. I've flown to Fairbanks a few times in January and getting ready to step out of the airport, you just steel yourself for those -45 temps.

Also, -10 and colder is BPC: butt-puckering cold. It's so cold that when you go outside, your butt puckers shut to make sure that no cold air comes in the back door.

When the lower 48 is butt ass cold, Alaska is warm and Vice versa. It has always been this way. This is not new.

The main thing that keeps me going on days like this is reminding myself that I hate extreme high temperatures even more. As vile as this shit is, I'll take it over 100 and high humidity every time. You can protect yourself against the cold. All you can do when it's hot like that is suffer.

Chris Meck 01-15-2024 06:38 AM

First morning of the snow, a 100 year old Hackberry tree in my backyard split in half. The half that fell just grazed my roof or I'd have been in real trouble. This half is about 50 feet long and easily two foot across.

Ironically, I'd taken a bid and made an appointment with a tree crew to take the tree down the week before.

Due to an emergency in which the job after mine DID have a tree go through their roof and puncture it, my job got moved back...and now it's still sitting there due to cold affecting several things on their end.

They're supposed to come tomorrow.

I got really luck, though. That would have done some serious damage if it had come down just a little bit over. And I'd have been basically exposed to the elements this whole time.

As it is, the furnace can't really keep up.

Minnesota utilities tell residents: Turn down your thermostats amid deep freeze
The state is trudging through subzero temperatures.

Utilities in Minnesota are calling on residents to turn down their thermostats due to a rise in demand for natural gas as extreme cold makes its way across the United States.

Xcel and Centerpoint Energy have each recommended reducing heat through at least Tuesday, noting that spot prices for natural gas are spiking due to supply and demand during the cold weather, and excessive usage could land customers with much higher costs.

Centerpoint recommends lowering thermostats to 65 degrees during the day when home and lowering it an additional five degrees when asleep or away. Xcel asks thermostats to be set from 65 to 70 degrees while home and 58 degrees when away.

The reduction could help limit the impact of higher prices on customers' bills, with turning down the heat in your home by 1 degree resulting in around 3% savings on your gas costs.

Xcel says for its customers, the increase in natural gas prices is "significant smaller" than the massive spike experienced during Winter Storm Uri in 2021.

Do I set my furnace lower and run my gas fireplace more or vice versa?

Graystoke 01-15-2024 10:01 AM

-7 here in Iowa. Luckily no wind here so doesn’t seem so bad. The snow and blizzards over the weekend left a mess at my house. Been shoveling and plowing for days.
I heat with wood and we’ve been feeding the beast like no other. Thankful for my wood shed as it keeps everything dry.
Hot house by day/into the evening but when we wake it’s chilly in the house and it’s time to stir the coals and start again.
I thought we would have a surplus of wood this year with how December went. With the way things are going we are gonna burn it all.

Good luck sleeping when the thermostat is at 60. Unless you're a White Walker or a pregnant woman, it will be miserable.

I wouldn't exactly like it, but as long as I've got enough blankets I'd be fine.

Hell, I'd be perfectly happy living in a place where the temperature never got above 60.

My garage isn't heated. It's polar bear comfy in there at 11 degrees, according to the car.

Same here. Mine was 0 this morning. It was -11 outside.

Still, having any sort of garage is wonderful. I have zero fond memories of parking my car outside in this shit.

Before I lived here I was in Chicago, digging out spots in the street and then marking them as my own with random bits of crap. That really sucked, but people mostly respected it.

Speaking of unheated garages, mine is attached but on the north side. It sucks because I would store liquids and they would freeze thus make them unuseable. I would have to move them inside over the winter.

We got a new garage door due to hail and got an insulated one. That made a big difference. I don't know if you could do a DYI slapping up foam boards (glue) in the door panels??

This last fall, I added more insulation in the crawl space above the garage (r13) to overlay the existing insulation.

It just got below freezing this last weekend. I am in NE KS.

Thinking these might be a simple band aide.

It was kind of an unwritten code that almost everybody honored. Also, people who parked in someone else's cleared spot tended to have rather unpleasant things happen to their vehicles that night.

I went out and de-iced the steps, got the truck thawed out and went to get dog food. No attempt at all had been made to do anything to the 4 roads I have to travel to get to a county highway. 21 degrees is our high today, which is a big deal down here. Thankfully, most of my MO cold weather gear was in storage when my house burned back in 2015. Though somehow all of the insulation in my green coveralls purchased in 1984 has disintegrated.

I’d be returning those 40-year old coveralls as defective! Do you have the receipt?
