Just kidding actually. I liked it.

From PFN:

1.31 Anton Harrison, OT, Oklahoma
2.52 (trade 63 and 135 and 2024 4th for it): Keon White, DE, GA Tech
3. 95 Jayden Reed, WR, Michigan State
4.122 Thomas Incoom, DE, Central Mchigan
5.168 Ronnie Bell, WR, Michigan

Rounds 6 on, I didn't do. But I'd be interested in some of the following guys in those rounds:

Brenton Cox, Jr (OK, he's super crazy, but talented. For a 6th or 7th? Roll of the dice)

Jerrod Clark, DL, Coastal Carolina (lot of potential, needs refinement)

In all, if the Chiefs came out of the draft with a top 3 that looked like this, Id be pretty pleased.

PFF:

1. BJ Ojulari, EDGE, LSU
2. Tyler Scott, WR, Cincinnati
3. Sam LaPorta, TE, Iowa
4. Connor Galvin, OT, Baylor
4. Tank Bigsby, RB, Auburn.
5. Jose Ramirez, EDGE, Eastern Michigan

Today's run on PFN, whose draft board has improved with updates.

1.31 Anton Harrison, OT, Oklahoma
Chiefs plan for the future... this pick assumes a franchise tag of Orlando Brown and no long-term deal. With a long-term deal, Darnell Wright, OT, Tennessee would be the pick.

2.52 Keion White, DE, Georgia Tech
With White dropping down the board a bit, I move 63, 134, and a 2024 4th to go up and nab him. Perfect Spags DE and someone who offers more explosiveness opposite Karlaftis.

3.95 Jayden Reed, WR, Michigan State
Reed's showing at the senior bowl has me intrigued.

4.122 Trey Dean III, S, Floria
Dean is a versatile, jumbo-sized S who profiles well in the slot. It would give the Chiefs some insurance for Sneed's role. Would need to believe Cook can handle more deep safety responsibilities for this pick to make complete sense.

5.148 Jonathan Mingo, WR, Ole Miss
I move my fifth and a 2024 fifth to jump and grab him. I really like Mingo's ability as a developmental "big slot" option. He seems perfectly suited for the role Smith-Schuster played in the offense in 2022.

And I'll stop there. 6th and 7th rounds are still too choppy to put much time into them.

This draft would leave me searching for some DT help in FA, but I do like the what has been added to the OL, DL and WR room in this one.

I like the players! But in reality if White didn't hit for whatever reason I'd be pissed we spent 3 picks on him. CP already goes crazy when a player chosen a few picks later performs better than the one we take.

I mean, it's two extra day 3 picks. The equivalent of a present-day 4th and 5th. To move up 11 spots and get a guy who is a perfect scheme fit for this defense.

White has the size and power Spagnuolo covets, while also having athleticism and explosiveness rare for a dude that size.

STRICTLY Best Player Available = BPA Draft.

Really hard to do because Naturally you want to fill the holes on the team.
Also amazing who was available and how it would look, actually did fit some of our needs but completely ignored a few positions I was hoping to fill.

No trades, was offered a few that looked good.

I only went 5 rounds as I havent spent enough time on the depth of this draft. Very interesting exercise, difficult to pass on players I am really hoping to land but if you stick to BPA you do get a hell of a haul!

NFL Mock Draft

Traded down 1st and next yrs 2nd (assuming OBJ is gone)

16 Broderick Jones
63 Felix Anudike-Uzohmah (bring Lee's Summit kid back home)
95 Cedric Tillman
122 Marvin Mims
135 Mekhi Garner (traded down a slot on 2 picks, likely unrealistic, of course)
169 JiAyir Brown (likely replaces Sneed...can cover slot and get TOs)
180 Moro Ojomo
192 DJ Johnson (pass rush rotation, see ya Kaindoh)
197 Jakorian Bennett (flyer on 4.30-40 CB)
217 Kobie Turner (good value here, probably won't last this long)
219 Keaton Mitchell (strike gold twice on 7th rnd RBs?)

Stopped here...unspectacular draft at the top, but a great year to build depth

JohnnyHammersticks 03-09-2023 09:27 PM

Had a decent draft going here on TDN but I didn't realize they had a 2 minute timer (which you can pause, but I didn't know that either) and the simulator auto-drafted Zacch Pickens at 123, so I pulled the rip cord on that mock. I actually like Pickens but I'm not sure it would've been my pick at that spot.

No picks traded for other players.

1.25 - KC makes a splash on draft night by trading up to take Anton Harrison, OT, Oklahoma. The flirtation with Tunsil even after signing Taylor makes me believe they're not done, and after watching main AFC competitor Cincinnati sit on its hands during FA re: OT, the Chiefs slide up juuuuuuuuust in front of them to take Harrison.

Draft room footage from Cincinnati features the same look of defeat and depression seen in the Buffalo war room in 2022 (McDuffie) and Houston in 2017 (Mahomes).

2.58 - Watching him slide, the Chiefs stop it and grab Isaiah Foskey, DE, Notre Dame.

3.95 - The Chiefs make another surprise/shocking move, taking FAMU WR Xavier Smith with their third-rounder.

4.122 - With DE, OT, and WR addressed, we move into BPA mode. And at this slot, that's Zaach Pickens, DT, South Carolina. He's long and strong and here to get his versility on.

6.197 - Darrell Luter, Jr. CB, South Alabama. Small school, check. Good athletic profile, check. Latest Chiefs value pick at DB?

6.217 - Jerrod Clark, DT, Coastal Carolina. Developmental guy I keep circling back to.

7.181 - Evan Hull, RB, Northwestern. Versatile, hard-running Big 10 back. Catches the ball well, 3rd-down back option.

7.249 - Asim Richards, IOL, North Carolina

I know Smith is Rnd 3 is splashy and surprising, but netting Harrison + one DE from that 35-60 range is a big win to me. Harrison gets an opportunity to win the LT job and takes it year 1. Foskey is a strong rotational piece.

Chiefs and Blart Smeech, Mall Cop continue to out-do the rest of the league, while laughing.

So The Draft Network brilliantly decides to beta test a new mock draft simulator right before the draft. I'm just posting this mock to show how ridiculously unrealistic it is now. That was my go-to website for mock draft simulations before this season. Wish they'd just scrap this beta test and go back to the one they had. It wasn't perfect, but it was the best one out there imo. Now it's just stupid. I want my $30 back.

It let me draft 5 top-20 DL with our first 5 picks. Reeruned.

32 Jalen Carter DL Georgia
64 Will Anderson Jr. DL Alabama
96 Myles Murphy DE Clemson
101 Bryan Bresee DE Clemson
123 Tyree Wilson DE Texas Tech
135 Jonathan Mingo WR Ole Miss
168 Zach Evans RB Ole Miss
199 Ronnie Bell WR Michigan
219 Kilian Zierer OT Auburn
227 Jon Gaines II OL Bruins
251 Malik Heath WR Ole Miss
252 Xavier Thomas EDGE Clemson

We'd win the next four Super Bowls and likely go undefeated for 4 seasons. LMAO

I hope the real draft goes like PFN thinks, because I keep absolutely killing it on the sim.

Dude. I balied on them when they immediately shut down their website right after the draft next year, and everything disappeared... including the profile pages. So I was paying monthly for a nonexistant product.

Would love that...did a PFN mock real quick and he wasn't falling on that one...interesting how these groups differ so much on certain players.

-Traded the first for two 2nds:

53) C. Kancey - DL (not ideal 1st pick)
61) K. White - E
63) Kincaid - TE (why is he dropping?)
95) X Hutchinson - WR
122) W. Morris - OT (looks pretty athletic to me)

Direckshun 03-24-2023 07:32 AM

I just went through a draft and asked myself... what's the most realistic draft I can put together?

The Chiefs are effectively done building at IOL, at TE unless they want to add a talent, at LB, and in the secondary. They could all use depth pieces but I like where they are there. It's pretty much (a.) DL and (b.) WR. A piece here or there, like at RB. But I think the Chiefs are able to plug the dam at swing tackle and backup QB.

So what's realistic, assuming one unrealistic thing: Veach doesn't trade.

Here's what I got.

1. DE Keion White, Georgia Tech

A selection that won't fill our dreams at night, but a perfect Spags pick who should hit the ground running, give you a quality rookie season, and give you a little bit of Pro Bowl upside. This gives you a DE depth chart of Omenihu/Karlaftis/Danna/White. That's a really good rotation, with some Pro Bowl potential, with four guys who can all play DT on passing downs.

2. WR Kayshon Boutte, LSU

I suspect the Chiefs will at least bring Justin Watson back, but aside from that, Boutte is a solid addition at the bottom of Round 2. Boutte will inspire few people, much like the White addition in the 1st, but Boutte was once thought of as 1st round talent, is probably a 3rd round talent now, and he's someone you can slot into an MVS role in a year if it all falls right. The offense needs more speed, and Boutte brings a lot of it in kind of a Chris Conley type role, which this offense has needed since Conley has moved on.

3. WR Nathaniel Dell, Houston

Like I said, the offense needs speed. Dell gives this team some dynamic stop/go that I haven't seen since Dante Hall. This is the first and maybe only pick of the entire draft that will give fans any kind of imagination. He's a gadget guy, and Andy Reid always has to have a gadget guy.

4. DT Keondre Coburn, Texas

I think this is fair value, and the Chiefs are honestly a little behind the 8 ball at defensive tackle. I'm sure there are still a host of cheap veterans they can add after the draft, but they need more stability at the position anyway, rather than relying purely on one-year rentals. Coburn is a stout 2-down run defender and will at least give the Chiefs one guy they know they can count on being on the depth chart for the next three years.

4. DE Isaiah McGuire, Missouri

Another perfect Spags guy. He's got some traits that may give him a ceiling, but honestly I look at McGuire and the only questions I have are fixable. Soon as you get some of this guy's technique down, he's going to be starter-caliber, I feel. He's not a total project to build from the ground up. In one year, the Chiefs will have to make a decision about Mike Danna and Omenihu will suddenly have a $11m cap hit, so McGuire and White fortify a position the Chiefs have been working for multiple years to build up.

5. RB Deuce Vaughn, Kansas State

There were bigger, faster RBs than Vaughn, and seeing how I just took Dell in the 3rd, I am leery about taking two small players in the same draft class -- but that should be seen as how much I love Vaughn's tape. This guy is Darren Sproles, all the way down to the Kansas State heritage. He's great receiving out of the backfield, outstanding wiggle in the open field, and a sneaky good running in traditional run sets.

6. S Jay Ward, LSU

Secondary is a sneaky need in the back of the draft for this team, which is surprising given how strong they are at the top 8 spots. But the Chiefs like having four safeties, and Dave Toub needs more special teams aces. All my picks the rest of the way will be (a.) attempts to bolster depth, and (b.) feeding Toub some guys. Part of the reason the Chiefs Teams sucked last year was because Toub didn't have a special teams core.

6. FB Hunter Luepke, North Dakota State

So continues my multiple-year campaign against Andy Reid's insistence to rarely use fullbacks. I think the Chiefs are actually really solid when they run duo concepts and Luepke not only fills a roster spot we literally have nobody at, he gives you a special teams weapon and offers you some juice in the passing game as well.

7. LB Yasir Abdullah, Louisville
7. IOL Juice Scruggs, Penn State

I can't believe Juice is available in the 7th, so I'm taking him despite his limited usefulness on special teams. Abdullah is purely a special teams addition.

I dont know if hes "OUR" guy but he was definitely Veachs guy. The more i think about it they might not be ready to give up on him yet. They got Taylor for LT type money so i think hes penciled in there. I could see them bringing in a freeland type a little later, but im starting to cool on the idea of a round 1 guy.

Will be interesting if one of Jones (not likely) or Harrison (much more likely) drops to 31. Would you be ok with paying Taylor LT $ and keeping him at RT? I think you could given that your new LT is on a rookie contract for several years. Would be nice to not have to worry about tackles for 4 yrs...

It does leave me thinking it's the biggest question. Is Niang as good as Wylie? Probably. Is he as durable...maybe not. Freeland would be fine to pick up later and develop but man we're relying on Niang to stay healthy and that seems a gamble.

I really don't want Zay Flowers in the 1st. Call me stupid I guess but I see too much similarity to Skyy Moore and a bunch of WRs in this draft where the value will be better. Sure, he's a bit more polished but I don't think that's enough for me to want him there. IMO Zay has a little more spark than Moore, more burst, twitch, athleticism, and potential for dynamic plays...I'd say he's in between Moore and Toney.

We're going to agree to disagree on most of this. I think Flowers is more agile but that's about it. Their speed is pretty much identical (Flowers 0.01 slower... big shit). Flowers is solidly 10 lbs smaller. Flowers has a rather significantly lesser 10-yard split so the burst would be more in Moore's favor. The difference in vertical is made up for by the difference in height so that's a push. Flowers has smaller hands. I really don't think you're getting anything much different. Maybe a little more quickness at the route break at the sacrifice of a little length.

I think the viewpoint is largely a byproduct of Moore not doing much as a rookie coupled with some recency bias. I'm just not all in for a WR that's pretty much the same dude, especially not in the first. Would I like another guy like that on the roster? Sure, but I like alot of day 3 talent there. Tre Tucker and Xavier Gipson are my top guys but there are quite a few I'd like.

I'd rather push the chips in on a different skill set from what we have.

4 rounds, 5 picks, no trades

31 Will McDonald IV EDGE | Iowa State - concerns of size were not enough pass on him at 31. Anton was still on the board and I seriously thought of taking him there, but I took a chance for Berg being there at 63 as I like Berg just as much as Anton on either the left or right side.

63 Matthew Bergeron OT | Syracuse - It fell the way I was hoping here and I would think Berg could possibly shore up the RT spot. And if need be could possibly move to LT if the need arises in a year or 2.

95 Rashee Rice WR | SMU - If this guy drop to 95 and we don't take him I am concerned someone is on Tranq in the organization. No brainer at 95.

122 Jonathan Mingo WR | Mississippi - After pick 95 with what was left on the board I was thinking either DL or WR. I saw that Karl Brooks, Ojomo at DT and KJ Henry at EDGE was still available on the board and thought for sure that one of them would fall to 134. So I wanted to answer the WR corps early enough where the further down we go the questions even become bigger with the prospects. Mingo was there. Done.

134 Moro Ojomo DL | Texas - TBH Ojomo would have been my 3rd option here with my thinking. I really wanted Karl Brooks or KJ Henry, 2 guys that I think may be real steals beyond the top guys. I guess it just wasn't meant to be.
