Then again, I can't recall a highly touted recruit ever NOT taking all his official visits just because it's fun to be pursued (and to **** as many 'tutors' as you'd like).

What a huge get he would be

Seemed foregone for a bit. He wasn't taking visits, hadn't asked to be release from his LOI and was ready to make a decision.

Nobody calls a presser to say they're asking to be let out of their LOI.

It's a big save; Roberts is a damn nice fit.

Roberts is already tweeting at Harris and Mizzou fans trying to do a little recruiting on his own.

What is happening here? Could Mizzou basketball be a fun thing again in the near future?

Knox is a legitimate possibility, which is crazy.

KChiefs1 04-03-2017 01:43 PM

Just got this excerpt from a news story sent to me. Sounds good.

Quote:

Martin also won over Roberts’ father Craig, who has been an AAU coach for over 20 years.

Craig Roberts said every person he called that knew Martin had nothing but good things to say about him.

He added that some coaches he didn’t plan on asking went out of their way to call him and express their support for Missouri’s new coach while the family waited to meet him.

“Everyone that I know that knows him, the first thing anyone said to me when I saw him was he’s a good guy and would be good with my son,” he said. “I do mean everyone. I can give you a list of all the kind of people that know him and called me to say he would be a good guy for my son.”

Another important factor for Craig Roberts was Martin’s defensive philosophy as a coach. For years Craig has told his son that the biggest thing he was missing as a player was to be a factor on the defensive side of the ball.

When Martin told the family during their meeting that playing no defense is the easiest way for his players to ride the bench, the elder Roberts knew that the family was in good hands.

“He laid it out,” Craig Roberts said. “You don’t defend, you don’t play. He told CJ that straight out. That’s non-negotiable. It only makes you a better player.”

With Porter and Roberts in the fold, if they got Knox they're going to be ridiculous. I'd honestly be shocked if they make the tourney next year. The only issue is how long will it take for the team to gel.

Cuonzo is going to have to be at his best to get Knox away from those schools. He is coming for a visit though so you never know.

The good thing is, Mizzou has nice facilities. Knox likely knew nothing about Mizzou prior to Martin and Porter. Getting him on campus is huge.

This is by all accounts an awesome start for the turnaround of Mizzou basketball so far, but does it concern anyone else that most of this top tier talent is coming here because we hired someones dad?

"A journey of a 1000 miles..."

If Michael Porter Sr. is the hire that makes us even remotely relevant again and gets 4-star+ kids to use visits to come see us (and seriously, we have some elite facilities), it won't bother me one bit.

They have to get something to get back off the mat and if this is that thing, so be it. None of this happens with out MPJ and with him in the fold, we could've easily accelerated the rebuild by 3-4 years. That's nothing but a good thing.

It's not a finish line - Cuonzo has to capitalize on that momentum. But it's a hell of a good start.

Not at all, if that's what gets the ball rolling that's fine. If this years talent puts 2 kids into the NBA, Mizzou will have a much easier recruiting path next year and in years to follow. If they make some noise in the tournament and get some 1 and dones, it's lights out from there. Kids want to go somewhere that feeds easily into the NBA. If they get that chance at Mizzou, they'll be more than happy to go there.

Not to mention if MPS gets all of his sons to go to Mizzou, shit that's 4 years of 4 star recruits in the bag.

DJ's left nut 04-04-2017 03:46 PM

The only caveat being "unless said recruits father is La'var Ball, who is a monumental prick."

Because as big a fan of Lonzo as I am (kid sees the floor like Nash), his dad simply ensures that he's not worth the effort for a college program. You're just tools in his scheme and you're not going to get the return that you think you will.

I am honestly shocked that La'var Bell gets any run whatsoever. He's just such an asshole, what he's doing to his kids career is unreal.

Sassy Squatch 04-04-2017 03:53 PM

If we can pull Knox as well that would ease my worries quite a bit. Porter Jr is straight up nepotism, but Knox would mean there was something else, whether it be Martin himself, the facilities, whatever else.

You can go to a Final 4 with nothing but CJ Roberts level recruits.

It's not the easiest, most direct path, but those kids with just enough rough edges to their games to need 3-4 years in college are going to be better than any 1 and done by their SR years. That's why NC just won the title - they brought back most of last year's squad and it showed in all those pressure situations in the tourney.

Roberts re-upping is a great sign. That's a guy that had very few ties to this team and had every reason to re-open yet didn't. He and his family loved what they saw here and stayed. If Cuonzo can get a handful of good 4-star recruits every year, he can have this program as a perennial Sweet 16 threat and at that point you're just a few lucky bounces from getting where you want to be (which is all you can ask in college basketball, with its midget 3 point line and whistle-happy officials).

I'll take your word for it. I'll be the first to admit I know jack and shit about the intricacies of college basketball and what it would take to become contenders year in and year out. If anything else, it's at least not a complete embarrassment to be a Mizzou basketball fan anymore.

He was overiding the HS coach from the stands and telling the players not to listen to the calls, etc... After the game (a WIN no less, a comeback after the coach changed up defensive schemes over Ball's bitching), he storms into the locker room and bawls the coach out.

Later, he goes on television and tells one of the national guys (maybe Steven A Smith?) that the HS coach is bi-polar and an addict and he's going to have him fired.

Like I said, the guy is just a complete one who sucks the penis.

I know that would have Barnett out of position I believe or you could switch him and porter but man this would be insane.

Tillman

I know that would have Barnett out of position I believe or you could switch him and porter but man this would be insane.

That would definitely be a super group. Those kids would give anybody in the NCAA a run for their money.

Assembling the new Fab 5?

Pitt Gorilla 04-05-2017 01:47 PM

If he gets his release within the next few days, he could be at Mizzou with MPJ, Knox, et al.

The big question would be whether they could gel in time to get a top 5 seed.

It's just impossible to overstate how important seeding is. Getting a team through clean to the Sweet 16, especially a young one that needs to see some live fire, is enormous.

If that team comes out and goes .500 through non-con play, they're setting themselves up to have to scramble to get into the tournament at all. If they enter the conference slate at 6-6, they'd likely need to go 16-6 over the last 22 to get in and even that may not be enough.

That's the thing with these rebuilds when they get down to the studs; if you completely gut a team, you need them to get together in a HURRY or your margin for error has pretty well vanished. 16-6 is tough sledding even for a solid, veteran team. When you're looking at an extremely talented but extremely young team in a conference that has Kentucky and Florida, not to mention a hell of a lot of genuinely good coaches on lesser programs that could jump up and bite you at any time.

But man, get out at 10-2 and you're off to the races with a shot at a genuinely good seed.

Damn - the reasonably cheap seats are gone, leaving pretty much nosebleeds or the $850/st or better season tickets.

****ed off and didn't make up my mind for too long. Idiot.

Our group just bought 50 season tickets. I wanted a suite but they are sold out.

Where?

We ended up in 207 and were advised to C/B in May to see if we can move up when they release more.

Jerm 04-05-2017 03:05 PM

Tilmon will be a Tiger....no doubt in my mind.

Add Knox as well and who knows what the ceiling for this team is.

Pepe Silvia 04-05-2017 03:13 PM

Prettay, Prettay, Prettay good.

One of our group knows Sterk & we ended up in 106 near the top. I'd rather have a suite.

So YOU'RE the assholes....

That was a spot in section 7; sold out literally minutes before we called in.

Jerm 04-05-2017 04:30 PM

Illini media already trying to throw Tilmon under the bus lol....just like Washington did.
