They explained this in an episode of "Sport Science" a few years ago. Basically the hard shell of football pads spreads the force of the impacts over a larger area very quickly, whereas pads made from a soft foam wouldn't be able to do that, so all the impact force would have to be absorbed by the foam in a much smaller area, making foam pads far less effective. Seems counterintuitive, but makes sense when you watch the simulations.

As long as they don't make them wear the puffy shirt.

If I had more time I'd photoshop one onto Tua's head the size of a swiss ball

Tell me why I'm wrong here - I know I must be, but not currently seeing it.

Essentially, turn the current helmet inside out.

If the helmet had most of the padding on the outside of the hard shell, it would take up most of the energy of contact. So if the helmet from the players head was: 3/4" dense foam, followed by hard plastic structural shell, followed by 1" guardian style foam - the helmets would be roughy the same size as current helmets, but absorb more contact energy. Big drawback is it wouldn't display a logo as well.

I know I must be wrong, but I guzzled two beers after completing some yard work - and I feel like I had some genius idea.

They look like Lemmings-from the video game

Tua needs to wear one wherever he goes even if not football related.

Saw Kyler Murrey wearing it once in camp looked like this.

I guess the league calls them guardian caps. The only positions not required to wear the caps are kickers, punters, quarterbacks, wide receivers and defensive backs.
