Is there such a thing as a good Royals podcast?

12. Kansas City Royals

Pitching they’ve got, thanks to a bumper crop of college pitchers selected in 2018 that should start to impact the major-league roster this year. The position player group lags well behind, with some very talented players in the system who have not converted their physical gifts into production yet, led by the troika of high-profile hitters — Nick Pratto, MJ Melendez and Seuly Matias — who struggled in High-A Wilmington last year, even as the parade of future rotation regulars passed through Delaware (paying a $4 toll).

Looks like a bomb sniffing dog had a false alarm on a vehicle in the parking lot

Epic SABR takedown of Eric Hosmer by Dan Symborski:

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/the-padr...-base-problem/

Essentially he was negative WAR value his two years. The only player in the last 35 years of data who had two awful years and got a 3rd year as a FT regular, Roger Cedeno, lost his job afterwards.

It’s a series of stats, but boy is that contract a Pujols-level albatross. ZiPS now predicts his next 6 years will be worth 1.8 wins. TOTAL.

Thank God the Padres saved DM and us from making that mistake. I doubt it would have gotten him fired and even if it did I don't think him getting canned would be worth the burden that a shit contract like that would have put on us. Hell, Ian Kennedy and Alex Gordon's contracts combined aren't anywhere close to as bad as Hosmer's. Talk about a guy that got paid and said "**** it, let's see if I can dig a hole to China by pounding the ball into the ground!".

The guy never improved or made any type of adjustment. He's still the same hitter he was when he was called up in 2011. He can fool you with some good streaks, but always reverts back. Guy is what he is -- a .768 OPS hitter -- which sucks at 1b.

duncan_idaho 03-04-2020 12:08 PM

Yeah, that was a bullet dodged. The fall-off has been really rapid.

His stubborness about his hitting approach is incredibly frustrating and something I'd be watching for with draft prospects for the rest of time.

Mecca 03-04-2020 12:10 PM

Eric Hosmers #1 problem is thinking his brother is a better hitting coach than dudes employed in the MLB, he does not listen to anyone where if he was more coachable he'd probably be a lot better.
