I really like Snowfall, which is from FX. We are watching it on Hulu.

As much as I like Milioti it seems like it's a feature length Black Mirror episode. |

The series could end up rocking, could suck. All I know is the trailer. |
Today I finished watching The Making of the Mob. A great series with only 2 seasons unfortunately. The 1st is about Lucky Luciano and the 2nd about Al Capone. Both seasons are really gorgeous. It is a pity that the series is over :(

Insanely late to the game here, but Schitt's Creek is delightful.

Loved the Breeders snippet at the end of the most recent episode of Resident Alien, perfect for the scene and great song all around, of one of my heavy rotation discs for a long long time, . . . maybe too long.

This show is super under rated. My favorite show on right now.

If you're the type who can't get enough of old school Boston corruption drama, City on a Hill is back for a 2nd season.
Kevin Bacon starring and directing. Sundays on SHO. |
Started The Serpent on Netflix last night. 2 episodes in and its very well done. Based on real life events of a conman and murderer in Asia during the 70s.
Its HBO series great in capturing the time period with wardrobe, style, etc. and Jenna Coleman is balls emptying hot. |

Anybody watching Made For Love on HBO? I'm liking it so far through the first three episodes. Based on a popular book, I guess. Ray Romano plays a really good supporting role.

Really enjoyed the way it was filmed and scored. There were times where I found myself tuning out the dialog and just watched the characters and scenery it was that good. Felt high end movie quality for an 8 episode series. |

The story is interesting enough to carry it alone, but feel the attention to details throughout is what boosted the quality of it. |
Any of you guys watching Snowfall? It's badass. Just when I think it's losing burst, BAM, no it is NOT.
Screamed at my TV tonight. |
Anyone dipped their toesies in Gangs of London?
A SKY TV production that Cinemax bought into and saw enough in to greenlight a second season. It's directed by the guy who did RAID and RAID Redemption. Only seen 1 ep and 1/2 a second, but it's pretty decent. I mean a lot of the broad strokes are what you'd expect and many of the twists are, if not foreseeable, . . . let's say sampled from an existing menu. But the details and the flow is surprising how well it draws you in. Really gets into the width, breadth, depth and comprehensiveness of modern organized crime, and pulls no punches with the visuals. <iframe width="950" height="534" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/SZRVEFtHaHc" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

Gangs of London is a bit derivative, but I doubt many will mind. A little Scorsese [actually more Departed than GoNY], a little GoT, a little Bodyguard [the 2018 series, not the Whitney Houston movie], and a good bit RAID and RAID Redemption. Lots of plotting and getting to 'safe houses' followed by assaults on said safe houses. CoaH is just plain 80s Boston crime and punishment hardball. The strength is in the writing and narrative pacing. |

Mythic Quest is back baby!!
Rewatching S1 to catch me back up, holds up well. Had forgotten that Caitlyn McGee [who now has a network sitcom with Eric 'Dumbass' Forman] was the basement-dwelling Media Relations chick. And man, the DQD storyline hits even harder with the Disney buyout narrative. I think the best thing about it, on rewatch, is that it tackles SJW stuff while not sacrificing the comedy. Which is, it lets the SJW 'voices' look just as dumb, petty and clueless as the those they are 'fighting.' Tina Fey and Robert Carlock have done that in a lot of their work, and obviously the foundations with McElhenney in IASIP leans WAAY into it. Danny Pudi's Brad character is a great efficient sociopathic reminder that good intentions aren't unidirectional and often don't keep the lights on. The creative team, McElhenny, Day, and Megan Ganz. Megan comes from Community and Modern Family, and you can see the fingerprints of keeping the bits coming to keep the narrative light. |

Separately, loved The Serpent. The 70s and Southeast Asia have always been super sketch and put them together and a character like that and you have a creepy/great story. Really enjoying Mare of Eastown thus far on HBO as well. |
Mare of Easttown is *chef’s kiss*

Really really, don't want to get specific because the experience is worth being unspoiled. |
I'm a couple episodes in on Mare of Easttown. I think they did a really good job capturing that towny vibe and the story is good enough to keep me watching, but there's something about Winslet's performance that makes me eye roll at times. I can't quite put my finger on it but it borderlines on terrible at times.
|
Quote:
Not so much the performance itself, but the veins on her forehead are distracting [two vertical above her right eye], and not in an age-lines way, but in a 'how long has she had that' and 'is she at risk for a stroke' way. Wondering if anyone had seen her facial expression exhibit them before. I'd never seen it, but I haven't seen everything she's done. |
Quote:
I think what grates me is she reminds me of someone I know in real life. Abrasive, stubborn, frumpy in a Subaru Outback driving kind of way, yet has a stable of dudes who should be way out of her league at a beck and call to ****. I guess that should make me appreciate the accuracy of the role. |

I've been enjoying the Nevers as well.

Just watched the first season of Mythic Quest last night. Great stuff.
Also watched the first season of Russian Doll on Netflix. Weird show, oddly entertaining. |

I had absolutely zero interest in Mare of Easttown, but decided to check it out based on the comments here. Actually pretty good, with enough shifts in the whodunnit guesses but nothing really major until this last episode. Winslet does a great job playing a character that at any moment find myself alternately rooting for her or wanting to whap her on the nose with a rolled up newspaper. lol

All the stuff I said about MQ kicked into high gear on the most recent episode. Really hitting on all cylinders, at least for my tastes.

I agree with waiting until Mare of Easttown ends to start it.
It’s like a James Patterson novel meets a My So Called Life/Party of Five/This Is Us type of network drama which isn’t in my wheelhouse. It spans the ‘this is great/is this a joke?’ spectrum in each episode for me. Feel a binge would’ve mitigated the HBO meets NBC feeling and I could focus more on the crime, which I understand is a personal preference of mine. |
With the dip in summer programming, browsing around for something to put on the queue. Curious if anyone has watched Mr. Inbetween on FX? It's an Aussie independent character study that was eventually built into a short, then a movie, then this FX series [all by the same creative team] and looks intriguing, but wanted to see if anyone had actually watched it or had any feedback on it.

Mythic Quest has been fantastic this season. Again. The post S1 pre S2 specials were hilarious.

It's really hard to summarize, though. Because it doesn't really stress any genre overly. He's smart, but not too smart. He's badass, but not too badass. Overall, it's a dry dark comedy, more dry than dark as in things just happen and you decide as a viewer if it's funny or shocking or what. If you want a mental image, imagine if Pete Davidson's 'Chad' character had just a smidge of Jason Bourne in him. Not that he's completely either character, more that he's resolute and decisive, while also having a flat affect and a taciturn nature. He's a weird mix of totally predictable and completely unpredictable. Also reminds you a bit of Get Shorty [the series, not the movie, without the big dreams of Hollywood] in that it's a low level hitman and his crew, and the Jim Jefferies series Legit in that it's working-class Aussie tales with a brother with special needs. <iframe width="950" height="534" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/FEFd9MNnMLc" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
eDave and lew got me hooked on Snowfall. Really an excellent series and consistently good through all 4 seasons.
|
I went through the Vikings series. I had started it when it first aired. Then they were going to Paris and I meh'd out. I decided to get back in and rewatched it.
It's worth the watch. There are parts that are pretty rough, but the story and performances are good enough to slog through the rough parts. It wasn't as good post-Ragnar, but still had it's hooks in me. The ending of each of the characters were largely ****ing awesome. That's not normally my bag, but holy shit. Awesome. I looked into some of the production, and got even more impressed. They apparently were using real weapons (blunted obviously) rather than rubber ones. And upon reflection, while a couple of the characters battle scenes get derivative, they really are well done, which is one reason I went back in. Moreover, a lot of the sets were practical, like the ships and shit, which they NEVER do, but upon learning that? WOW. All in all, It's a good watch. And Katheryn Winnick is hot. |

If you want something that is bucolic and amiable, while also being interesting;
<iframe width="1110" height="624" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/pW-iVG0_D34" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> Obviously, it has the Clarkson 'stamp.' He mucks about and fuddy-duddies. Some of it is played up for camera and some of it is hand-waved for time and editing, but it's a great little primer look into the complexities of operating a modern farm. And much of it a GORGEOUS. He has some beautiful pastures and the cinematographers are good at catching little slices of beauty and wildlife and weather to intersperse the narrative. On Amazon Prime. |
For must watch series then I prefer Loki series, I stream the series over Ivacy vpn - HBO max streaming and it was good experience.

My wife started binging Manifest recently on Netflix and I’ve checked it out with her…started out interesting with a great premise and then just goes completely and utterly off the rails.
The most ridiculous plot armor I’ve ever seen, unlikable characters everywhere, and a story that goes all over the place and has no idea what it wants to be. I was bummed…. |
I thoroughly enjoyed "The Serpent" on Netflix. It was sneakingly good.

It makes a difference to pay attention. This is still a show that will be ponderous to you if you only half-watch it, but if you really get into it, it is superbly choreographed. The best part on a rewatch, the conventional wisdom is these are all amoral assholes. But it's also interesting to see both the impulse and the peril underneath it for people to try to be decent. Being a cutthroat asshole has its rewards and pitfalls, but there are a number of small moments where people seem to try to connect or 'be real' that are every bit as dangerous and destructive as any bad behavior. It's a bit like Shakespeare, both in its intrigue and complexity and in the tightly choreographed narrative, as well as that initial repulsion or distance you experience as a viewer trying to keep track of it all. And it also has that fateful pre-ordained sense of the narrative, even as all the characters strive mightily against it. But if you commit, it's a good deal more rewarding than other, more brainless, fare. |
Big Succession Fan. It nails a lot of shit. But you're right, it takes some focus.

'calm your Kegeling weiner' EDIT - found this 'words are nothing, . . . just complicated airflow' is not one of the funniest, but one of the most trenchant lines of the show.
