I hear you there. It also completely limits your mishits on your short irons. You hit one fat? Big deal. Your club will just scoot along the mat and you'll still hit a good shot. Depends on your knowledge of your own swing and your feel.

Personally, I can tell you where I hit every ball based on how it feels 1/10 of a second after impact.

Unfortunately, I've played at enough munis to where I've had few other options when I've warmed up.

Right now, the course where I usually hit balls has octagonal mats, which can actually make it difficult for you to take a full stance.

Sound can also tell a huge amount, especially on iron shots.
