Ohtani has been made filthy rich playing a game by America. In 7 years here he has not bothered to learn the language. Why?

He speaks English but doesn't like to talk to the media. He's also a very private person who doesn't like to do media in general. Ichiro did for an entire career because he didn't want anyone mixing up his words.

If he was fluent in English then he wouldn’t require the services of a translator who ended up… allegedly… stealing millions of $$$ from him.

Do you need a translator to help you comprehend the obvious?

If mark Cuban wasn't so damn rich he could have time tobclean his house and then he wouldn't end up with a housekeeper who stole from him. If Patrick mahomes knew accounting he wouldn't need to hire a financial planner to handle his finances and taxes.

Seems like a weird takeaway from this story. Yes a guy who is rich and spends a lot of time being elite in his craft hires people who help him. News at 10.

He may be fluent but may have a heavy accent. Ichiro still has a accent despite living in the US for decades and it can be lead to some embarrassment. For example many Japanese tend to turn si into shi since si is not a sound in Japanese but shi is. So sit often becomes shit. So he may speak without a translator to his friends, managers, and teammates. To the media or when doing business he uses a translator.

Remember a translator not only translates but also put things in cultural context. Not really a problem with English as English speakers tend to be very blunt and straight forward but Japanese are usually more vague particularly when it comes to speaking with people who you are not friends with.

You don't need to speak English to have some awareness of what's happening to your money. Him getting defrauded is a separate issue from what language he speaks. It could have just as easily been an assistant or manager.

Moreover, it's ****ing weird to act as if it's someone's responsibility to learn a particular language in order to live somewhere.

The best quote of all time was a Costas interview where he asked ichiro about the best American phrase he ever learned. He said in Kansas city he learned the phrase "it's hotter than 2 rats ****ing in a wool sock"

The $700 million, supposed “face of MLB” should be able to communicate with the media… is that an unreasonable expectation? Imagine Mahomes or LeBron being completely unable to fulfill media/PR responsibilities as the marquee players in their respective sports.

Also how does Victor Wembanyama arrive from France and is immediately able to know enough English to communicate with the media/teammates, but Ohtani still required a full time translator after living in America for SEVEN YEARS?

Imagine forcing Zach greinke or Ricky Williams to do large media blitzes despite their extreme social anxiety. None of this is a pre-req to being an athlete. If a team wants to be this petty, they can refuse to sign him and some other team will gladly sign him. And if the MLB wants to get rid of him for that reason they can take the gajillions they're raking in from his publicity, especially international. He isn't obligated to do a damn thing except play the best possible baseball to earn his contract

Also there are a baijillion American athletes who play in international basketball or soccer leagues that probably do not speak the native language.

chiefzilla1501 04-12-2024 11:53 AM

Also if Justin Jefferson came to the chiefs, spoke very little English and played at an mvp level I doubt any chiefs fans would care

What does him not knowing English have to do with money being stolen? Even if he spoke English now, then he still would probably have this dude taking care of his finances. It has nothing to do with speaking English and everything to do with being way too trusting?

You're such a stupid ****

chiefzilla1501 04-17-2024 03:36 PM

Holy ****, Jontay porter bet on his own team to lose?

Permanent banhammer. Do not pass go. That’s so messed up.
