That would be smart. I think the DC should be allowed to pick his guys unless he gets boycotted by a majority of scouts/coaches.

Awesome then. It's a MAJOR upgrade. :)

There might be a marginal upgrade here but this is organizational cowardice; known mediocrity over taking a chance on a guy who actually be a force multplier of some sort.

Even money says our defense is again in the bottom 1/3 of the league in most meaningful categories next year. If we're lucky we'll win the next shootout in January but Spags won't do anything to help us avoid it. There's just very little 'there' there. He's sizzle over steak and has been since he was exposed with the Rams. He has 1 halfway decent defense over the last 10 seasons to his credit and a whole bunch of pretty shitty ones.

Well we didn’t have many options.

Keep in mind that Sutton wouldn’t blitz, wouldn’t be creative, left the middle of the field open, wouldn’t jam Edelman, wouldn’t double Edelman at all times and was easily figured out by anybody who watched the All 22.

This isn’t a home run hire, but goddamn does it seem like it after what we saw from Sutton’s dumbass last weekend.

Does Spags have a attitude? Can he get in your face? The defense needs some attitude

Jesus Christ....it starts.

"Thank God we got rid of Greg Robinson. Anybody is better than him and his sourpuss face on the sidelines. Gunther is gonna come in here and breath fire, send blitzes and round this entire team into shape. We need someone with some attitude!!!!"

IT'S THE SAME. ****ING. THING.

I mean to the damn letter. And again - nobody will ever in a million years argue that firing Robinson was the wrong move - of course it wasn't. But hiring that recycled half-wit Gunther to be the DC because he was 'fiery' and flamboyant and mostly just familiar was the problem.

This is one of those 'winning the war and losing the peace' scenarios where everyone just assumes that achieving the first, most pressing and primary objective is good enough for a happily ever after. But it isn't - the second part is damn critical as well.

And all we've done with Spagnuolo is Gunther 2.0.

Gravedigger 01-23-2019 10:20 AM

Meh. We'll see.

This....exactly.

Titty Meat 01-23-2019 10:21 AM

Yup this is Gunther II

staylor26 01-23-2019 10:21 AM

I get it, but not enough can be said about the situations Spags was in since his first stint with the Giants.

Just look at the difference between Ken Norton’s Oakland defenses and the Seahawks this year.

Yeah - far better to give it to the guy that's failed about 3/4 of the time he's been given plenary authority over a defense over the last decade.

I mean everyone has excuses. ****, you can make excuses for Sutton if you want to. And I'm sure people will be here next season making excuses for Spagnuolo as well.

This is the time that the Chiefs should be making bold moves designed to push through the ceiling. They actually have an offense that can help the young up and comer while he gets his feet under him and takes command of that side of the ball over the course of a season. Shit, they carried the defense to the #1 seed this year.

The key is to have a cohesive unit by the post-season and I think a young guy would've had plenty of time to do so. Instead we're just recycling Reid's cronies.

Folks - this is the shit that proved his undoing in Philadelphia. I think Andy's one of the 10 best coaches of all time but goddammit we cannot lose another playoff game because the DC got his job out of misplaced loyalty and/or simple familiarity.

There are BETTER guys out there than Spaguolo. And if we take a chance on a guy who hasn't done it before (or not at this level) you're right that it's possible we won't actually get one of them. But if we don't take the chance, this product of his own press clippings is gonna be the same fungible asshole with a headset we've seen on the sidelines before.

You know who he is? He's just another Gunther. It took multiple failures, included failed HC stints, for people to realize that he was a nothing; just a product of Derrick Thomas and Neil Smith. But he yelled a lot on the sidelines and blitzed some so people just assumed he was a genius. Well we're at about the same point in the Steve Spagnuolo career arc. Let's just get him some yellow sunglasses and we should be good to go.

Again just trying to keep a positive attitude. But bountygate and the mcadoo fiasco are beyond legitimate excuses.

Bwana 01-23-2019 10:21 AM

He's not Bob, therefore, he's an upgrade.

The Franchise 01-23-2019 10:22 AM

It's pretty much who I thought it would be.

As much as I wanted him to....Andy wasn't turning over the defense to a young guy with no experience as a DC.

Am I excited? Meh...not really. Is it better than Sutton? Yes.

Maybe now we'll shit can this stupid 3-4 and be aggressive.

WRONG.

Spagnuolo is from the Andy Reid tree, after previously working under Reid and Jim Johnson in Philadelphia, where Spagnuolo learned the aggressive blitz-heavy 4-3 scheme that helped the Giants to take down Tom Brady and the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

O.city 01-23-2019 10:23 AM

If this is what happens, the 34 is pretty much gone.

Spagnuolo is a 43 under guy IIRC>

LOL ... damn, man.

If you would be so kind ... I need specifics. Where can I find defensive rankings under Spagnuliolo? Why is he sizzleish and not steaklike? What other DC candidates would be both an improvement and innovative?

C'mon dude, spill.
